My dad had a boxy red Weber when I was a kid. He still has it. Through my desire to find "buy it for life" items for our home that I can care for, and that will take care of me, I found that the older Webers are as good as it gets. I started with a Green 1999 Spirit that I thought I would restore, but I bought it from Craigslist and it turned out that it was in great condition, especially for $20.
So unbeknownst to my wife, I was searching for a second grill...a project. I found this Genesis 1000 on Craigslist for $30 with a full tank. The Spirit fit in my Prius with the hatch closed. The Genesis 1000 required me to hold on in the backseat for a couple of blocks. Below are photos of my process of stripping it down and cleaning it up.
The Spirit 500 LX
Bringing home the Genesis. What a show!
Before...
Stripped down...sanding
Prepping...
More sanding. No rust!
Painted! I found that power washing the "Weber" on the wheels made a tremendous difference. Also, sanding the silver bar for the wheels cleaned them up great!
Here's the final shot. Not my best lighting. All new wood. New burner knobs and start switch made a huge difference. Downloaded the "Full - Empty" .PDF on these forums. Purchased weatherproof sticker paper and they turned out GREAT! Also added another sticker to the grill that isn't pictured. New piezo starter. I think the Weber tank cover cleans it up really nice. I can add more photos if anyone is interested. I sanded and painted EVERYTHING except the inside of the box/lid and the red lid.
This forum has been a tremendous resource - thank you to everyone for past information and current feedback and insight. Happy grilling!
Edit...here are some bonus pictures. Found this 2000 Genesis Gold B Maroon on the side of the road. It's Natural Gas so my plan is to wait until we expand our small deck and I might add in a natural gas line. I haven't had time to clean it up yet.
About 6 weeks later I found both of these 2014 Spirit E-210s on the side of the road on the same day. Fit BOTH in the trunk of my Prius. Cleaned up one that I have already sold to fund my...grilling habit. The other one needed a new starter and burner tubes that I just installed. Going to gift that to a friend after it's 100%.
