Missouri > Kansas City: Q39 - Midtown

Q39's owner and head chef died last Friday after a long fight against cancer.

Wow - the guy that started Blues Hog BBQ passed in the last few weeks too. Tough times for the BBQ community. Agree with the original post, Q39 has incredible food, hopefully that doesn't change. Q39 is far better than Jack's Stack (I've been there twice in the past 6 months, WP Plaza location, and it was meh both times. I'm trying to Joe's KC BBQ but it might be a month or two before I can get there.

I would rate Q39 as a tie with Joe's of Kansas City for the best we tried. Joe's makes more sense to me as a lunch place while Q39 with wait staff might be a better choice for dinner.

Q39 - Midtown

Mrs. TVWB and I visited Q39's Midtown location while passing through KC in November 2025. We ordered the beef brisket & burnt ends competition plate + two ribs, with fries and baked beans as our sides.

I walked away from the experience thinking:
  • I'm glad we tried Q39, but I wouldn't go again.
  • Everything tasted good, but portion sizes were a bit small and prices high. We dropped $73 for the food shown in the photo plus a beer and an iced tea not shown.
  • I prefer the taste of Central Texas style barbecue.
  • I'm not a fan of "chef-driven barbecue"--that's their description, not mine.
  • I prefer to eat barbecue without cloth napkins, wait staff, and the kind of open kitchen you see in fancier restaurants.
After eating, we still had enough of an appetite that we drove to Joe's Kansas City BBQ for another lunch!

Here are some pics. I would note that the exterior restaurant photo doesn't look very inviting, but those big black shades to the left of the entrance roll up to reveal a very attractive covered outdoor dining area, which was closed off during out visit.
