Minion w/ lump

I always use lump charcoal but light it using Gary Wiviotts method (K.I.S.S) as described in his book. However, I've seen inconsistent results with this method. I'm sure people have used the minion with lump charcoal, and if you have, could you please share your results with me? There are a ton of videos and reviews using briquettes, but not lump.
Thanks.

When I use lump I use the Minion method. I fill the ring with unlit and top it with lit. I've not had any negative results with doing it this way.

I use a Weber starter cube in my lump. Once it starts catching the surrounding coal I put the WSM together and let it heat up. I think it takes a little longer to come up to temp this way but I've not had an overshoot (yet)

It's really no different than if using briquettes. In addition to lighting with a partial chimney, I've had good results with both a weed burner and starter cubes.

Used lump for the first time about a month ago. Filled my 18.5's ring with Lazarri mesquite lump and put 10 lit KBB atop it. Worked great. Ran at 275-300 lid for my brisket for 7+ hours rock steady with only the leeward vent opened 25%-50%.
