Has anybody tried McCormick Grill Mates Applewood Rub? Does it have a strong apple flavor? Sweet? Salty? Spicy? I am going to give this a try tomorrow. My problem with store bought rubs is that they are salty and not enough sweetness to it.

I can describe it as sweet with a little kick at the end. Not salty Overall its good.

Have you tried Wee Willys Ryan? As far as I know its only available locally and I love it, I even sent some to Jim Lampe and he gave it the seal of approval.

I hate to admit this but... Pampered Chef makes a fantastic smoked applewood spice/rub.

Brad, why would you hate to admit it since when all is said and done we are all cooks. They make things for cooks so we should embrace the concept. My wife has some of their things and they work well. Just my two cents.

I really like the GM applewood rub on pork (butts, pork steaks, etc).

Since an ingredient list starts with the greatest amounts added, and moves to the least amounts, this rub is lower in salt than many of them out there.

Ingredients: Sugar, spices and herbs (including chili pepper and red pepper), garlic, salt, maltodextrin, onion, silicon dioxide (added to make free flowing), tamarind extract, molasses, apple cider vinegar, natural applewood smoke flavor, malic acid and caramel color.

I hear ya , man. Pampered chef does sound a little girly. We less evolved types like to picture ourselves cooking over a roaring fire with sweat dripping off and all the hair burnt off our blacksmith-like forearms.
