Mangal Grill Leftovers

I thought I would use last night's fillet steak leftovers done on the Mangal-Grill for dinner tonight, & make a healthy salad.

Thinly sliced fillet steak/Rocket Leaves/Little Gem Lettuce/Red Onion/Yellow Capsicum/Toms/Spring Onions/Cucumber/Grated fresh Halloumi Cheese & Black Olives. EVOO & a squeeze of lemon.

So far, so good. Then whilst rooting about in the fridge, it all goes pear-shaped quickly! I spy some homemade Merguez snorkers & two slices of Black Pudding! Slammed the fridge door shut and went outside to fire up Smokey Joe. Epic failure for a healthy dinner! :p

Merguez snorkers.

SJ in action, with homemade ash pan. (I drilled a 1" hole in the bottom for better air flow). All that smoke is being caused by all the lovely fat dripping on the coals. Mmm!

Thanks for looking. :)

Excellent cook Tony! I drilled four 1/4" holes in my SJ right at the charcoal grate line. Vastly improved air flow. That all the SJ's need, a little more air and they cook like nobody's business

Looks healthy to me. The salad offsets the fat in the sausage! :p What kind of sausage are snorkers? What type of sausage do they compare to in the U.S.?

Alan. Snorkers are British slang for any sausages in general.

From Wikipedia.
Snorkers is a British English colloquialism for sausages. The reference is probably to the resemblance between a sausage and a snorkel. It may have a Royal Navy slang origin.
Snorkers is the nickname for Palethorpe's pre-cooked tinned sausages. The nickname originated aboard World War II Royal Navy submarines, along with other culinary delights such as HITS (tinned Herrings In Tomato Sauce) and Baby's Heads (tinned steak and kidney pudding). Fresh food lasted only a few days aboard submarines so nearly everything was tinned.

Edit: We also call them:

Bangers. (Banger: The sausages were so called because of the risk of explosion if not carefully cooked, due to excessive amounts of water stored inside the sausages to increase their mass and saleability).

or

Snags.(Australia, informal, colloquial) (A sausage).

Who doesn't like bangers, & who doesn't like creamy mash potatoes? With fried onions & gravy on top....mmmmm!

We used to have it quite a lot as kids, as it was a cheap meal. (When there was 5 kids in the house, & not a lot of money, Mum had to make the grocery money s...t...r...e...t...c...h).

Tony,

What kind of sausage do you like best for bangers & mash?

I thought it was pretty delicious with cumberland-style snorkers. Do you have a favorite?

Dave,

You cannot go wrong with Cumberland Snorkers. They are delicious.

If I had to make a choice, I would go with the Lincolnshire Snorker, or the Gloucester Snorker. But the Beef/Pork Snorkers my local butcher makes are delightful also.

Tony,

Nice compromise on that meal. ONe man's epic failure is another man's favorite dinner. That sausage (snorker?) looks very tasty...

Regards,

John
