Maintaining Temperature

I am new at this smoking process.

The first couple of smokes I sound it rather easy to maintain a 220 temp using briquettes. This time, with the advice of a local grilling store, :wsm22: I used charcoal and have found it hard to maintain the temperature.

I started some of the charcoal put them into the cooker and then filled charcoal on top with wood spread around the edges.

So any advice would be very welcomed. thanks in advance

Sound advice by Dwain. There is a lot of great info on the site. Those articles Dwain referenced are a couple of the first I read when I first got my 18.5 and were very helpful. I'm sure you'll find them helpful as well.

I use the tin can minion method found on the virtual weber bullet site. I use half a chimney of lit, 1/3 would be fine too. I find it gives me a great start with good air flow.
