Hi everyone. I'm heading to Kansas City in the next month for about a day or 2 and wanted to get recommendations for good BBQ joints. I have heard of Arthur Bryant's and Danny Edward's, but what do you recommend? I can probably only go to 3 to 4 restaurants at most, so tell me where you would go if you were me.

Thanks, Randy

I'm not sure how KC is laid out, but if you're anyways near North Kansas City MO you HAVE to go to Smokin' Guns (1218 Swift, North Kansas City MO, 816-221-2535 - they're some of the top competitors in the nation for several years now. These folks won the Jack Daniels a few years ago. I've had their barbecue, and it is absolutely outstanding. We've met them a few times, and they're great folks. Seems like I've heard they're closed on the weekends. They do a BIG lunch business.

See their website HERE.

Also see their review here, where they're one of the highest-rated BBQ restaurants in Kansas City! (Thanks for that link, Chris.)

Zarda's BBQ and Oklahoma Joe's are my favorites. Lived here 39 years and still don't really care for Bryants or Gates even though they get all the exposure.

Thanks everyone for your input. I am trying to convince my wife to have every meal at a BBQ restaurant, so hopefully I can squeeze in 5 BBQ meals while we are there

If your wife doesn't want to go to one of the "joints", you could always go to one of the "nice" restaurants like KC Masterpiece on the Plaza, or Jackstack just north of Crown Center, along the railroad tracks.

Hi everyone... Just returned from my KC escapade. I was able to visit 4 BBQ joints and had an interesting time. We went to Fiorella's Jack Stack in the freight district, Oklahoma Joe's, Arthur Bryants at the Ameristar Casino, and Danny Edwards. We tried a bunch of stuff but a few things stood out. My favorite place was Arthur Bryant's. I was a little skeptical at first b/c of the location and b/c some people said it was overhyped. Well, I definitely liked their pork and their brisket sandwiches. Both were tender, good flavoring, and had good smokiness about them. Their spareribs were pretty good too and had a touch of spice to them. Oklahoma Joe's was also a great place with their Carolina pulled pork sandwich and their addictive fries. Fiorella's had a might tasty crown prime beef ribs, but their burnt ends and spareribs were disappointing. Danny Edwards had good spicy chicken wings (skin was crisp!) and a good brisket sandwich. All in all it was a fun trip and I would definitely go back. Thanks to everyone for their help and input.
