LOL! OK, anyone here know German? I DO, I DO!

The German word for Vienna is "Wien" (pronounced VEEN). Anyone (male) or anything from Wien or the surrounding area is called a "Wiener" (we pronounce this as WEENER, as in "hot dog"). Females are called a Wienerine (VEEnerREEN) "ine" being the diminutive suffix.

FWIW, wein (pronounced VINE) is wine.

Class dismissed. :)

I used to run rabbit dogs with my wife's grandpa. We would try to tun then dogs on average 3 times a week. After the dogs would get on a rabbit, he and I would walk back to his truck where he had a small cooler; sardines and saltines for him, Vienna sausages and saltines for me. We would sit and talk and (and eat our snacks) for about 90 minutes, and then go call the dogs off the rabbit. We never carried a gun, it wasn't about killing. It was just a way for he and I to get away for a few hours doing what we both loved to do.
I still get a can of Viennas from time to time..

That brings back memories. My grandpa always had a few rabbit beagles (sometimes more than a few) and I had the privilege of going with him to run the dogs a few times. There is nothing quite like the sound of the beagles when they first jump the rabbit and the chase is on. Vienna sausages were practically a staple food in Western NC back in those days.

I'm tempted to make some comment about scrapple, but then somebody would come back with a comment about livermush, so I'll simply say that anything with grill marks is probably worth a try. I'd bet you would like your first Vienna sausage a lot better than I liked my first (and last) escargot. ;)

Some nice nostalgic comments. We all have our triggers that remind us of days gone by. I've had these a few times and wouldn't hesitate to munch on them again.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy vienna sausages straight from the can from time to time. But putting them on the grill does something to them, as they turned out almost too salty to eat and tasted like really cheap hot dogs. Although at .75/can they might qualify as such.;)

Back when my kids were first starting to eat a variety of solid foods, Gerber made little sausages (and they might still do so today) that looked an awful lot like mini viennas. I never tried one but I'll bet from a nutrition standpoint they were better.;)

Back in the days when I walked uphill to and fro school we considered these--and Spam--a terrific treat. I often had fried Spam but these Viennas were always eaten from the can... now I have an excuse to try them a new way

I grilled some once, can't find the pic now.
Fishing trip food when I was a kid.
Let's not forget about beanee weenees too.
