Here's what I've always envisioned, and finally got the time to do this past Saturday:

12"x6ft wood, with a couple of 2x3 studs. Some screws, a couple of hinges and L hooks. The L hooks latch on top of the existing handle:

The hinges allow me to store it away when not in use:

Total cost: $15.
Now, I can start on some new experiments! Brazilian BBQ using an old pair of tongs. Manually turn every two minutes. Shave off and re-sprinkle with salt. Repeat. Mmmmm.

Now all I need to do is add tool hooks. Two screws on the side are good enough for me.
