Ideas to protect inner shelf in new Genesis

I have a new Genesis II with the metal cabint.
I have griddle and smoke box I dont want to scratch and rust my cabinet.

Thoughts on protection? Was thinking cutting thin plywood and sealing it.

Greg,
Maybe that or a plastic cutting board or a box with a soft bottom. One problem I see is moisture trapped under whatever you use. I might suggest plenty of auto wax on the painted steel cabinetry and regular removal of whatever you use and cleaning/drying of the cabinet interior.

Closed in cabinetry, unless made of 304 stainless, is almost guaranteed to be a major pain.

Maybe I need a wire rack to allow it to breath. And the Grill is 100% covered from the elements on my covered porch.

A covered porch is a big help. An elevated wire rack might be a perfect solution. Great idea!

I would be worried about moisture getting trapped between anything solid and the metal bottom.

Is that stuff adhesive or does it just lay on top?

It's just a piece of ABS plastic. It does not have an adhesive backing. It's held in place by the stop on the left and the notches around the legs on the right. It's a couple of years old now and I'm really happy with how it works.

Yeah, I am blessed with a low humidity environment here in California, and the cooker is always stored and used under a covered patio where it's dry, dry, dry. Three years now, still like new.

ABS so it's not "flexible"? Or is it really thin and therefore comes on a roll and you cut to fit? What's nice about the shelf liners I linked is the material is similar to silicone. So it lays really flat and stays put almost like it sticks to the shelf (but there is no adhesive). Though it can be "torn" with mishandling. Though the ABS stuff sounds great as well because it's really rugged and would really protect against stuff being thrown in there

It's a hard, thin sheet, maybe 1/16" thick. It flexes, but it's not flexible in the sense that you can roll it up or fold it back onto itself. It's a sturdy solid sheet that's impact resistant, is not porous, and so far has done a great job for me. The thing I noticed about the Summit charcoal grill in the showroom was that the storage surface was completely scratched up just from people moving the charcoal bin in and out a few times, and I wasn't having any of that if I bought one of these expensive grills.

Chris,
That was really good timely thinking on your part. It does frustrate me a little that on such a nice (and expensive) product that Weber has clearly positioned as a top drawer offering that they couldn’t have sprung for all high grade stainless. If not that they could have done something like you did with a plastic coating.
