If the manifold is salvageable, I would fire it up to see if that is the problem. But, if you plan to toss that, then I wouldn't bother unless your curiosity drives you to do so.
 
Believe me I've seen so many of those back burn issues over the years from all brands of grills. It will not be an inferno. It's just a slow "lazy" and "dirty" burn because there is not enough O2 getting to it to cause good combustion. If gas does not get though the burner ignites but but right in the venturi and the flame cannot mix with air properly so you get these large very dirty orange flames that will come out of there around the control valve and under the control panel. Very common

I fired up the one I had --- it actually took a while before the flames started under the panel - I thought everything was fine until 5-10 minutes later when enough gas collected and caught thru the burner tube hole.
 
I wouldn't waste the cocktail! I am actually pretty excited by this one. Has some really stout CI grates that looked to have been very well cared for and actually seasoned. I haven't rehabbed CI before. And the cook box bolt area appears pretty solid.
 
Absolutely! I think I want to take the screws out of the control panel and leave it on and then yank it off after it ignites. Or if I just try and ignite it right out of the valve... I wonder if my wife would film it for me.

I do have a camera mount I forgot I have for recording baseball games! Good call. If she were recording she could be considered an accessory to my untimely death, and not be eligible for death benefits.
 
Yah, and we probably don't need to reinforce our reputation of being Dumb Guys who do dumb stuff.

It is like the time I experimented with dying plastic grill parts in our kitchen. I waited until the wife wasn't home....and as it turned out, for good reason. We don't need to remove all doubt that we are stupid guys.
