Thanks Ed I appreciate it.So sorry for your loss, Josh.
Thanks Eric I appreciate it.Josh, I'm so sorry. I'm very glad that this group is a place you feel comfort from. I know we all appreciate and value you, and I hope things get better for you soon. I'll be thinking of you
I’ll take a box of slats and a handle!I picked up over 150ft of IPE Ironwood Brazilian Walnut 1"x6" today for free. Exactly what I was looking for but was expecting to pay a decent amount for it. Also about 100ft of Cedar for free. Both were leftover from a new home and deck build. Now I'm 1 step closer to making new slats and handles. Also cutting boards/serving trays.
We'll see. No promisesI’ll take a box of slats and a handle!
It's incredible stuff. Feels about as heavy as metal and rock hard. Extremely weather resistant. Which is why it's used on boats and docks and decks. For reference teak known for being exceptionally whether resistant last an average of 50 years in the elements and IPE lasts an average of 75 years in the elements. The downside is that it's hard to work with and hard on saw blades. I need to get some carbide tipped saw blades. I just got some really good carbide tipped router bits. That's is really cool! IIRC that IPE is also what guitar fret boards are made from
Sure looks like the finger boards on my Martin guitars. I recall a shop telling me it needed special tools to work with and they called it "iron wood"It's incredible stuff. Here is an unfinished piece I wiped with water. It's a dark wood with black streaks.

Thanks Steve! I like a challenge and if it's difficult to do I'll appreciate the end result that much more.Beautiful stuff, I hope it isn't too much of a nightmare to work with.
Making slats might not be too bad but I can picture all the things that could and probably will go wrong on the handle. I know you'll figure it out though. Thanks Steve! I like a challenge and if it's difficult to do I'll appreciate the end result that much more.
I'm not looking for easy. Im in no hurry.
Very much looking forward to it!Making slats might not be too bad but I can picture all the things that could and probably will go wrong on the handle. I know you'll figure it out though.
IPE is great for outdoors. Very dense (it sinks in water instead of floating). Also called ironwood. It's incredible stuff. Feels about as heavy as metal and rock hard. Extremely weather resistant.
