I got a new 14.5 WSM today.

My fiancée bought it for me for my upcoming birthday. I already have two 18.5 WSM's so I'm not new to WSM's. Are there any differences in using the smaller one vs the bigger ones? I'll probably break it in with some BB ribs next weekend. How long does a full ring of Kingsford last on this smaller WSM? Thanks for any tips on using this one.

I've done St L cut ribs for a 6 hr cook but that's the longest I've gone. I think it will go longer but not sure how much longer.

Wayne;
I have had my new 14.5" for a little more than a week but the weather has been so bad I have not cooked on it. As of now, my outlook is good for Tuesday. I will do one or two Boston Butts at that time (assuming we don't get another ton of snow like we did last night).

I've had a Mini-Joe for some time and done some VERY nice cooks on it and I expect the 14.5" to do at least as well. It appears to have quite a bit more charcoal capacity so I would guess that translates to a longer burn.

I'd say you have a VERY nice and thoughtful Fiance'. She sounds like a keeper!

Thanks guys. How much lit charcoal are you guys using when doing the minion method? On my 18.5 WSM, I use 12-15 lit on a full ring. Thanks.

When I've used the Mini-Joe, 8-10 briquettes are enough. Note that I use the "Tin Can Minion Method". I'll be doing the same thing in my 14.5" WSM (I use 12 in the 18.5" WSM).

I did the "burn off" in my 14.5" today and will try two Boston Butts tomorrow, if everything goes well (I have a trip to the Dentist in the morning:() and will run one BB in my Mini-Joe alongside as a fun comparison.

Thanks for the information. I will try 10 briquettes and see how that does. It's pretty windy today so I will have to use my windbreak. At least the temps are in the 50's.
