Hospital Pulled Pork

So I think I have Pulled Pork down. While prepping Sunday morning for a pulled pork cook I cut my finger badly. I was cutting a potato in half to put my temp probe through and didn't bother to use a cutting board cause I didn't want to clean it. Of course the knife went on an angle and into my finger. The WSM was already fired up and the pork was rubbed so I put in on anyway after getting some paper towel to stop the bleeding. My wife thought /i was crazy for putting the butts on after cutting my finger but I didn't realize how bad it was and I thought a couple of stitches would be quick. Off we went to the local hospital where the dr looked at it said there is nothing wd can do for you....after a quick 2 hour wait, they sent me to a specialist at a different hospital. We had to pass by our house so we stopped and added some charcoal to ensure that the fire wouldn't go out while we were gone. We got home from the hospital about 6 hours later and the butts were reading 170ish. Added a little more coal and went inside to have some dinner. Another 2 hours later both butts were reading 195+ so they were pulled. By my wife of course, because at this time I have my finger wrapped after having nerve damage, a gnarly looking wound and a follow up appointment with a specialist.

Butts rubbed up. One with Bad Byron's Butt Rub, the other with Three Little Pigs

Butts done. Didn't take note of which was which after not being there all day.

Sorry no plated pics as we didn't end up eating any that night, except a few pieces as my wife was pulling it. It was really juicy and had a nice smoke flavour. I was quite surprised it turned out considering I usually spray apple juice over my butts throughout the cook, but obviously didn't have the chance this time.

Sorry for the rambling long post, but I figured I should explain the situation. And I learned 2 lessons from this experience. I'm getting the good Maverick with 2 probes so I don't have to cut another potato for my probe...and don't be too @#$%ing lazy to clean te damn cutting board and use it!

Looks darn tasty...I can only hope my upcoming cook has the same results. I have the Maverick 732 on it's way from Amazon, it will go right from the box to the WSM.

I recognized you as a fellow Canadian when you said "Off we went to the local hospital where the dr looked at it said there is nothing wd can do for you....after a quick 2 hour wait, they sent me to a specialist at a different hospital."

Only a Canadian would call a 2 hour wait at the hospital "quick" and then wait 6 hours at another hospital for a specialist!

Butts look good...hopefully you get your finger sorted out quickly and painlessly. A friend of my wife's did the same thing and had to have surgery and months of physio after. Hopefully your recovery is faster and easier.

I'm with you, i think i would have done the exact same thing. Why let good pork go to waste....the finger will still need fixed later any way right?

I can't believe you continued cooking and taking pictures of the food after you cut your finger. ;)
At least you're able to return home for a good dinner. Get well soon!

Jeez...the lengths people go to for great BBQ! That's some serious dedication to your craft. Hope you get back to 100% quickly. When I first saw the title of the thread, I thought that you were being served pulled pork during a hospital stay :p

Bummer about cutting your finger. Sure hope it heals up quickly. The pork butts look fantastic! Great job.

Bummer on the finger, but well done on the pork! I have sliced and stitched a finger on my hand cooking, no nerve or tendon damage, just stitches. Was hoping you would have posted a pic of the finger!

Never let it be said TVWBB team doesn't complete the mission despite insurmountable odds. That's true BBQ dedication. Well done man.

Now that is dedication to get a cook done!!! Pork looks excellent and I hope the nerve damage is not too severe on that finger!!
