High heat smoking destroys access door handles

I've been using the high heat method for my briskets over the last few years. The problem is that high temperature is causing the plastic handle to deteriorate where the bolt connect to it. I've gone through two access doors assemblies over the last year. Fortunately Weber's warranty covers the handles so they have shipped the replacements for free. However, its a drag when the handle falls apart during a smoke.

Do you guys have any suggestions on how to modify the handle so this doesn't keep happening?

Weird. Aren't there people who make wood handles? I would think that would last longer. Maybe wait to see if it happens again first in case your first ones were off somehow.

What year WSM?
I do mostly HH on my 08 WSM and never had that problem.
Maybe switch over to a metal cabinet pull/knob. The threads per inch should be close to the original bolt.

I know the handles (wood) on my hibachi deteriorate in the same way over time. I don't know that wood is your answer.
