Gyro and Kofta Kabobs

Went to a Mediterranean store to pick up some ground lamb and came back with a bunch more stuff, mostly premade.

Used an Alton brown recipe to make gyro meat and then placed them on skewers. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/gyro-meat-with-tzatziki-sauce-recipe.html

The skewer idea is probably not necessary, I just thought it might hold them together better.
Saw some prepared Kofta so I got a pound to try. I ran out of metal skewers so they are on wooden skewers.

Skewers cooked indirect till 150* internal

Removed the metal skewers, they were in the way and finished cooking the kabobs direct to get some color on them.

Served on a pita with tzatziki sauce, tomatoes, red onion and dolmas, and tabbouleh, all premade at the store on the side. I forgot to get some Feta cheese and the meal was just not the same without it. Will pick up some tomorrow for leftovers for sure!!!

That's cool, Mediterranean flavors are something I should try to do more of. There's a Turkish family that has a restaurant near here, and that looks like the sort of thing they would do.

That looks great! How did the gyro turn out? Comparable to stuff you get from stores and restaurants?
How do you like the cast iron grates compared to the original? Thanks for posting.

The meat is pretty close and the Tzatziki sauce is excellent. I forgot to mention I did a mixture of half lamb and half ground beef. I tried the markets sauce today and theirs was good but not as good as the one in the recipe.

Cast Iron grates, I love them, best upgrade by far, and I have a lot of gadgets. I highly recommend them!!!

Very good looking Greek classic John. I love Feta and I understand that you missed. Yet it had to taste great, I am convinced;)

My kinda meal! Looks terrific John. Mash oil Feta/sliced chili/evoo and serve as a "spread" is awesome with cooks like this.

2 thumbs up in my book!

Thanks for the feedback, that's awesome. I will have to move the CI grates up on the ole wish list!

John, I have seen Alton do this but man....you did it better than him. So the lady of my house had a lamb when she was a little girl and will not eat lamb. You really nailed this cook my friend.
