Genesis XXI (Jr) Restoration

They both look great Josh. Are you going to use your roll painting technique for the endcaps? That technique I learned from you worked great on the Silver B endcaps I did. I was wondering if you also roll paint the outside of the cookbox or do you spray paint it? I sprayed my Silver B cookbox but on this next one I'm thinking of rolling both the endcaps and the cookbox. What do you think?
I do both methods spraying and rolling. Just depends on some factors like location and condition.

Here is the original igniter and one out of an x000 side burner. They are pretty similar. I think I'll clean both of them up as options for final assembly. Still considering modifying a 7509 also. I think I can easily come up with something great. Otherwise there's the Genesis gold side burner igniter option from Steve.

I wonder when they changed from that design to the later one with stainless flame catcher box, both your other Jr and mine have them fitted and work fine.... Apparently the box is still the same.

@HankBates
What's crazy to me is the date stamps on the lid end caps and the cook box on both of mine are 1988. But they are completely different. Different style control panel, control panel knobs, igniter and fuel level sticker. Those are the differences I've noticed so far. They were sold in different parts of the country. Could this have anything to do with it.

Well I just retried a regular gas collector style Weber 7509 and it fit this time. I must have been tired last night. I'm guessing Weber switched to the gas collector box style because it's more effective at lighting on the first try.

Those bent wire electrode types are pretty much industry standard spark igniters. You will see them in Broilmaster, Charbroil, the very old Ducane, and more than I can count. Just go on Amazon and look up grill igniters and I'll bet you can come up with a box full of them

The standard 7509 that normally comes in these first and second generation Genesis grills actually is going to work perfectly

First time seeing locking nut washer and washer with the round bolts that fasten the lid to the lid end caps. Seems like a better stronger option but all of them except two are a bit seized with corrosion and spinning so they're currently soaking. Hopefully I can get it before too long. No way to stop them from spinning. Usually they just have cheap thread nuts on them that come off without effort.

That is a little different. I would have wire wheeled them clean before trying to remove them, then sprayed them if they didn't loosen up.
I didn't want to wire wheel them while they were still on because I didn't want to scratch the porcelain enamel coating on the lid but that could have possibly been an easier route. Wish you were here an hour ago LOL

I used one of these back in the 60s/70s when my hobby was restoring straight 8 Buicks
I was thinking about rigging up a clamp in a similar fashion over the wrench and onto the other side but the lower ones are about 8 in deep from the edge and I don't have a clamp that deep. I am getting them though slowly. Two more each side to go 😁

I lost my Snap On one I used for years as mechanic. I ended up buying it because there was a string of Cadillacs IIRC 65-67 with a faulty heat riser valve. (only us old farts know what that is ) :D
Anyway if I did 5 of those jobs I think I did over 150! Trying to make flat rate was crazy. So a "nut cracker" was in order. That tool saved my bacon so many times I cannot count. I'd reach up on that manifold and if the nit did not budge on the first tug of my wrench, I did not waste time. The nutcracker came out and made short work of it. Which also of course saved the threads on the exhaust manifold studs. Handy tool
