Jon, now that you don't need it and ceased looking for it, that plug should turn up any day now. It works like that for me almost every time!
 
One last comment: The thermometer on the Genesis I seems to have been an appearing and disappearing item. It was there on there in 1986, gone by 1988 and back again in 1990!

Yes, that is strange. Since I've never even seen a picture of one on the forum before, I have to wonder how many thermometer -less grills are really out there.
