garage door torsion spring

Ah Fletcher, I to replaced a heater core behind the dash. What a job. Ford Taurus 90 something. Called dealer after I was done just out of curiosity for price. Core was 15.00. Labor charge at dealer was over 600
Yep; mine was on a 2004 Taurus and I did it Thanksgiving night several years ago. I gave it a test drive at about 2AM, came home, showered, and ate leftovers, lol.

Prior to that, I replaced one in my 1977 Thunderbird when I was a teenager... opened the hood, removed some bolts housing the core near the firewall, and it was easy-peasy.

When the door is up the springs hold the door from crashing down.
Disconnect the safety on a garage opener with a faulty door spring and you will have a guillotine.
Right, or am I missing something?
Correct.
It's a bear to lift that door open when the spring is broken so that you can work on it.
The door weighs.... A lot....about 200 lbs. When it's horizontal the horizontal track is supporting the weight and when it starts to come down that weight comes on fast and it comes down hard if allowed.

And, (thankfully) for me broke during the night while the door was closed.
Did you run around trying to find out what had collapsed, like I did the first time my spring broke? 😲 The second time (years later, different house) I recognized the loud rumbling noise and didn't panic.

I didn't hear it break. Went out Sunday to do some work in the garage and the door didn't open.

Repairs are done and it should good for another 10 years. I decided to replace the end support bearings which were seized. The door is much quieter now.

Had a friend killed trying to install a garage door spring. One of the two metal bars he was using to torque the spring slipped out his hand. The other bar hit him in the head and opened up his skull. He died instantly. Nothing to try if you are not a professional.
Dave,

I read your post and am sorry to hear this happened to your friend. Your post made me think twice about the safety aspects and I made sure I was out of harms way. I even opted to wear a hard hat.

Great job Dan, I'm definitely impressed! I just can't bring myself to attempt this job, it scares the **** out of me. Of course, I can't tell you how many times I've done plumbing work in my house knowing that failure meant not having running/hot water until a plumber could fix my mess, not to mention the shame of having my man card revoked.😄

Yeah but a plumbing error typically won't maim or kill you. I bought the special tools and gave the spring a try ONCE. It was enough to convince me to leave the job to someone who knew how to handle it correctly. I regularly replace rollers and the like though. Those are easy

I replaced my noisy metal rollers with DURA-LIFT Ultra-Life MAX sealed bearing plastic ones that are much quieter.

I replaced mine in fall of 2019 and they are a lot quieter. The other thing that I replaced last month was the end mount bearings and the center support bearing. The combination of the rollers and new bearings on the torsion bar has made my garage door very quiet.

might as add links to the end pieces.

and center mount with bearing for the spring.

One torsion spring broke on our main garage door here several years ago. For what the local guy charged to come out and replace both springs, as well as a general inspection, I won't even think about getting the ladder out.
This just came back around again on the guitar.....

We broke a spring over the weekend, and managed to find somebody locally to fix it this afternoon. Good god above, there *ARE* power winders for those springs, driven by electric drill motors. This thing was amazing. The guy using it said that it was a complete life changer.
