Flaking 18"[ WSM

I fired up the WSM the other day to clean it out… temp got up there and now the finish seems to be flaking off. I discovered this while cooking a couple butts. Had to pitch them because no way was I going to eat meat covered with black paint chips or what ever that was. Any suggestions on how to fix this? thinking about water and soap and then light steel wool and then coat with vegetable oil..
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm going to guess it's charcoal ash that sticked to the side of the wsm rather than anything coming from the wsm itself

There is no paint to peel on the WSM, so it is likely just a build-up of grease and smoke that accumulates on the inside of the lid, and perhaps the sides. It does look like peeling paint, but it isn't. You can just scrape it off, and you should be good to go.

I've seen it on my Weber kettle and my Weber Genesis gas grill.

As far as eating it, I wouldn't want to either, but you should be able to just pick it off of your food.

Just get a handful of paper towel and give the inside a good wipe. It's just residue build up, not paint. Agreed, you wouldn't want it in your food

Ball up some aluminum foil and rub down the inside of the lid. You'll see when the flaky build up is just about gone. When it is, rinse the inside of the lid out with a hose and you're good to go.

I noticed the same thing on my kettle after I first got it many moons ago. I was concerned about it and called Weber. It's carbon build up. I believe it's harmless. Since then, all of my Webers get it. I just knock off the big pieces that look like they are about to fall off. Otherwise, I don't worry about it anymore.

Sounds like it is ruined. I'll buy it off you for $100 just to be nice. :)

Seriously not much more to add then above except to say my Genesis grill got the same thing and I thought the exact same thing until I researched as well.

I find i got more flakeage on my lid when i ran the wsm with water . I've been running with out water now and i get a nice black glossy coating on the inside of the lid. If it starts to flake i just take my grill brush to it gently.
