Eyes hurt when using a grill.

Anyone ever have this issue?
I notice when I grill, the smoke/steam whatever hits my eyes and they hurt like I've chopped up onions.

If I hang out while my charcoal is taking ignition in the chimney the smoke bothers my eyes, and when I open the lid during a smoke. I keep a pair of safety glasses nearby to mitigate the irritation when it's a problem. I don't really have this issue when using a gas grill.

I just realized the seasoning I use has red pepper flakes. I wonder if that's doing it?
