Cleaning Warming Racks and Swinging Baskets on Early Genesis.

After work today I decided to clean my warming racks on the 1998 Genesis I picked up this weekend. My similar Genesis did not come with them so I thought I'd clean them and install them in the grill I'm using.
How do most people clean these? Does anyone actually use them? The swinging basket has two positions in the lid. Is that useful? I heard once the swinging baskets are for warming hot dog rolls. Seems like you could use them for other stuff.
Anyway, I started on them with the nylon angle grinder brush but then switched to a brasinbound4454616252236842389.jpginbound692639630717178848.jpginbound3551749253060091975.jpginbound3333019906974760148.jpginbound3418461818699697618.jpgs wire wheel. Cleaning those things took some time and effort. I was wondering if there was a chemical or boiling method. They didn't come out like new but at least they are clean enough to use - even for just hot dog rolls.

I have to say that most of those that I have recovered on old grills were WAY more crusted with rust. When it gets that bad, you really can't do much with them. I believe there are some stainless options for the warming rack, but I don't believe any for that swing basket. I virtually never include one of those on any of my restores whether for others or myself.

I usually include a warming rack if I have a decent one on hand. The swinging basket is kind of pricey so I'm not handing new ones out on that item for sure.
 
I like Steve's idea of baking potatoes in the swinging rack. I feel fortunate to get one in relatively good shape so I should try it out. Here is a page from a color brochure I got from another grill purchase. All units got warming racks but no mention of the swinging rack.inbound471204909222625315.jpg

I think they all came with one originally, it's just hit or miss if it's still there 20 + years later. From what I gather here hardly anyone uses either rack anyway.
 
1 out of twenty of my Silver B rehab pickups still have a warming rack in them. My theory is that people find them annoying and take them out never to put them back in or they rot out and just never get replaced.
 
I'm not positive if the base model came with the swing basket. I'd think they all came with the warming rack though.
I would guess that all x000 grills came with both.
I know I have picked up base model 1000s with both but they could have been added after original purchase.
 
The swing basket was optional on some. I think once you got to the Genesis 2 (xxx) level and up they put it there. At least it was in my standard literature from when I bought my grill and my dad's when he bought the 2000. They both showed the hanging basket as standard
