Chimney starter

Are you talking about the side burner or the grate inside your BBQ? I light mine with the side burner, but if I were to light charcoal inside my gasser, I would take out the grate and the flavor bar(s) and set the chimney directly on the burner. It's probably wise not to load up the chimney, the weight might harm the burner, probably best to do two or more 1/2 loads vs 1 full load

I've seen it done. In fact at Harry Soo's class I attend a few years ago in Oakland. If it's a Weber chimney I would suggest inverting the cone inside so it is pointing down and thus getting the coals closer to the flame. Sounds like a good way to use a gas grill :D

Chuck makes a good point. Pretty sure the gas grill Harry was starting coals on he used the side burner...
