Cheesy Western

We had some frozen hamburger patties from Omaha Steaks from Christmas that we decided to cook tonight. Thinking of a way to make them "interesting", I decided to make a "Cheesy Western". Anyone from Southwest Virginia probably is familiar with the Texas Tavern, a delicious hole in the wall in Roanoke, Va. who's most popular sandwich is a cheeseburger topped with a fried egg that they call a Cheesy Western. By coincidence a guy at work game me some eggs from his son's free range chickens. No brainer. Made some fries too...

Here we go.

There's some talk on the "Recipe Requests & Ingredient Questions" about the "Perfect French Fry Recipe". Most agree with a double fry. I decided to try and "bake" them first (instead of the first fry) and then fry them at 350-400. Baking.

Frying in batches.

Fries done and staying warm on the grill.

Hamburgers on and egg pan preheating.

Egg frying.

Everything off (the girls didn't want a Cheesy Western, so no egg for them).

Plated.

Thanks for dropping by.

Ah, the Texas Tavern: Roanoke's Millionaires' Club. Seating 1,000 people (10 at a time). My daughter loved the Cheesy Western, but I must admit that in 20 years of living in Roanoke I never had one.

Truly awesome! Best french fries I've ever seen on a grill and those burgers are not slacking at all. Nice work! I need a burger.

We had burgers tonight too, and I thought they were great.

Until I saw this post.

Simply awesome.

My wife is from Lynchburg, Va. and she introduced me to a cheesy western about 14 years ago. It seems to be a popular menu item in the Lynchburg area. We eat one everytime we visit and sometimes cook them at home. They add a special relish made by Pride of Virgina.

Mike G, the T-room in Lynchburg make their own relish. Pride of Virginia is similar but not quite the same. I have eaten many of westerns over the years, they are awesome.

How far is the drive Jim?
I say we leave now, i'll pick you up. We'll alternate drivers every few hours. We should be able to kidnap Don and make him cook for us by tomorrow afternoon?

I agree - I grew up in Lynchburg and often ate at the Texas Tavern. It was a small hole in the wall with a counter and 10 stools. No tables! A sign on the wall said "We seat 100 people, 10 at a time".

Thanks for the memories Don.

Haha! Thanks everyone. Been a while since I was at "The T"...totally forgot about the relish. Also, forgot about the one in Lynchburg. Use to eat there when visiting a friend who went to Lynchburg College.
