Charcoal grate in new 18.5" WSM closes the gaps?

Is the Smokey Joe grate the same size as the WSM grate? Thanks.

True, but if you use lump the double grate mod is still one of the easiest ways to corral smaller pieces of lump.
Even with the gaps closed or not.

No, that's the old version and not what I just received in the mail. My box says:

Thanks for the parts #-ordered the grate and some black handles today.

I just saw this topic that made me check my 18.5" WSM. My grate has the gap. I will note the part # and order a replacement.

Another thing people do not talk about is that for some reason the briquettes are a little smaller too! The blue bag stuff falls thru more easy because they are smaller then they used to be! If you look at Royal Oak and some others that still use that standard shape of the briquette, they have not gotten smaller like kings!

I just did the double charcoal grate thing. Picked up the 18.5 charcoal grate from HD for $8.99. So not only are the gaps not an issue anymore, but I can cross the grates to accommodate lump better too!

I was going to get some expanded metal to fill the gaps, but the expanded metal sheet (smallest size) was $9.99. So it was just cheaper to get another charcoal grate.

Maybe Weber did this on purpose to sell more 18.5 charcoal grates. :-)

Also, I have to imagine that the replacement charcoal grate for the 18.5 WSM is more expensive than $8.99 charcoal grate.

While doing my smoke today I noticed that the grate I thought was for the lower middle section looks like the new charcoal grate with the gap filled in. If that is the case, where is the 2nd cooking grate?

It's a little over 2X that amount. The crossed method saved a lot of charcoal from yesterday's cook. I did a 6 hr. cook at 225' - 250' and there was a handful of ash and a lot of unburnt charcoal afterwards.

Original WSM cooking grates are triple nickel plated and look like shiny chrome when brand new. Top grate measures 17-1/2", bottom grate 17".

Charcoal grate is dull metal and measures 15-1/4". Some have a gap on either side, some do not.

If your lower grate is dull, it could be the finish is worn off or was replaced with a charcoal grate from another Weber grill.

Dave,

I just ordered a replacement charcoal grate from Weber for my 18.5" WSM, it has the gaps filled in.

In addition to the new grate, I also use an extra charcoal grate from an 18" Kettle, and have it wired inside the charcoal ring so that I can cross the bars with the WSM grate and also shake out the spent ash and keep the good lump for another cook.

Chris, so what's the bottom line? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>Based on this thread, I have no idea. It seems they're shipping out both types randomly.

Gotcha, thanks. I guess they sell what they have to sell. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I wouldn't even bother Dave. The cheaper route is to just pick up an 18.5 replacement grate from HD ($8.99) or Lowes. It fits right into the charcoal ring in an 18.5 WSM and no more gaps. If you flip the grate upside down, it fits right into the other grate and it's basically on one plane. And it allows plenty of room for ash to fall through. And you can also cross-hatch them for lump usage and the smaller pieces of lump won't fall through.

The grate that I thought was a second charcoal grate is shiny. I will need to look for a 2nd charcoal grate so I can cross the grates.
