Char-Griller Auto Akorn Kamado thoughts

Anyone that missed this cooker at the sale price of $224.49 shame on you. I needed one for no reason at all but…..and handed over to the boss the same amount of cash to remove some of the F5 category tornado out of it. The grill/smoker is just as amazing as Tom H says it is. I’ve done the burn in seasoning the grates and it held temp rock steady and used almost no coal for a three hour seasoning. I went a bit longer than recommended just to set the seasoning well but it’s tight and well built for the money. I looked back today and found its back at full price. I’ll get cooking tomorrow but watching video reviews seem to be fairly accurate and people are happy. Oh and fact not fiction, all threaded insert no nuts and 7/16 bolts! How did that get out?! 👍🏻

what size is it? not that i have any thoughts. i'm unoriginal at best.
20” diameter cast iron cooking grate. They say it’s the same size as their full size Kamado which I’m not familiar with. Center removable section like the Summit maybe for dedicated accessories?

Yeah I have been reading about it. IIRC I even posted one of TH's videos. I may just have to watch for one

Looking forward to seeing it in action, Mike. I know the Akorn is a great cooker, I'm sure the Auto Kamado is also.

St Louis ribs on the auto Akorn today. I forgot to grab the last cook on this which was a pork butt. This cooker is very impressive for the cost and will hold set temps varing +/- 5 degrees for hours using very little fuel. Don’t miss it if it pops again. Also a couple slabs next door on the WSM. 085BDE38-69D8-44DF-BE8F-84BD052CB53C.jpeg7404C5DA-9564-4603-8F85-C82D61D2E487.jpeg93ABD8AD-937C-426C-84FF-86B52A2B28BE.jpeg63F82959-C6A4-4DAB-8C6D-9F5BC2F26F01.jpegBBBC2F4E-F874-49D2-9C4A-AFD4B1F4C600.jpegDDC1228D-D1F3-418F-B055-6167C484F151.jpeg5C257149-F225-416E-B11A-553D2412C888.jpegE3750EC9-5142-452F-B14F-3B8EE296C74B.jpeg

So was this a WSM - char-griller-auto-akorn cookoff? I see what looks like both in action doing the same thing? If so, results?

Akorns are excellent cookers. The Auto Akorn is ingenious.
I'm on my third Akorn. I neglected the first one and it rusted badly. I bought the Junior for my second one...it was great but too small. Sold it quickly on FBMP.
I've got the cart model now. Bought it two years ago or so when we moved into the place we're in now.
I use the TipTopTemp on the the top damper...but the Auto feature is so much better. $225 for the Auto Akorn is a no-brainer. I paid $200 plus $35 for the TTT in May 2021 but the Auto had not hit the stores yet then. That's a stock photo. Mine is below our deck(and hasn't been hit by a golf ball yet🤞)and covered. I've learned how to store it to avoid rust in the vulnerable area...remove the ash pan underneath and store it upside down under the lid and cover the Akorn.

That is a good way to store it. I picked up one to rescue the table for my WSM as the bottom was completely rusted out. I also rescued the handle and hinge that I have been trying to give a way as it would be great for another WSM.

They're actually quite well made but they are sheet metal subject to extreme heat on the inside steel layer. The ash pan is the weak spot for rust as water gets in it and is held there by the ashes. The grates are CI and will rust but a decent seasoning will prevent that.
The TipTopTemp certainly works but I've found that you're on your own to learn how to use it and it's not necessarily a short learning curve. ..their website sucks. That's why the Auto Akorn at $225 is such a screaming deal.

Great advice! I'll have to try that

Joe not a cook comparison but my wife likes a sweet rub and I’m not necessarily a sweet rib guy but not a hater either. The other pair had my favorite dry rub(Morton season all). They were both excellent tender and moist. You can see the fuel and peach smoke chunks in both. Low and slow.

I pulled the trigger when these were half price. It was delivered on Dec 11, 2022. I absolutely love it. So versatile and very efficient with the charcoal. I've done pulled pork, pizza's, steaks, veggies and chicken on it. My poor Weber's, I haven't used any of them since I got this grill.

I don’t want to upset the Weber brand here but it’s a magical cooker. It doesn’t look like I’ll ever have to add more lump again, it just keeps going on very little.
