Caveman Strip Steaks and Asparagus

I started carving up that monster 15# whole strip I bought yesterday. We also got 2# of fresh picked asparagus this morning.

Ready for the fire. The strips are going on caveman style while the asparagus and burgers for the boys will be done on the grate.

I have GOT to go caveman one of these nights. I love me some steak and grilled asparagus.

Awesome looking cook, Tim.

I've only cooked caveman style once - we hiked to Lone Peak (11,253' elevation with a ~5500' trailhead start) w/ frozen porterhouses in our backpacks, set up camp & threw on our thawed steaks. We were camping just 150-200' below the summit...were pretty drunk & out of alcohol, but there was char & ash on the meat that really didn't do it for me. I prefer a grill, or maybe next time I'll rig up a wooden or stone grate...

Tim - these look great!

I'd like to try Caveman as well, but if Clint was camping and drunk and didn't like them then I may need to reconsider. I'm pretty sure that drunk and camping make food 1000X better than normal. What's the accepted method for getting the ash off?

Love it!

Jon: you get such a good sear and crust, that any debris pretty much just falls off with a light tap/brush.

anyone worried about the ash, there is a simple solution. Fan the coals with a newspaper or piece of cardboard to blow off any loose ash.

Also you need to make sure you use good quality NATURAL LUMP CHARCOAL. No briquettes here.

You can watch Steven Raichlen make them on this video HERE.

Remember, Do or do not. There is no try.

Those steaks look super! Not sure I would attempt that drunk(says the sober at the moment guy!)

I have cooked and eaten way worse hose-bagged and I (barely) remember it being excellent!

Nailed nailed nailed!!!!!! I also never get tired of seeing that brick red grill in action! Please post another picture of it!
