Buy your last grill first

Greetings from New Jersey.

I met my future wife in 1988, and she thought it was a little weird that I didn’t own a TV- I liked her enough and decided to rectify that- we went to the local appliance chain one night after work.

Leaving the store we passed a woman who asked us if we wanted a cookie? Sure- she lifted up the lid of a grill and got two fresh baked cookies and handed them to us. They were pretty good- fast forward three years and we got married- bought a house and eventually were flush enough to buy a barbecue grill- that demonstration three years earlier really stuck in my head and off we went and bought a Genesis 1000 in red.

A really great grill, used it all four seasons and only replaced the original steel grates and flavorizer bars.

Never thought too much about it, but this past spring the grill wasn’t heating to my satisfaction- I thought it might have been the drip pan which wasn’t on the grill anymore since the holder bars rusted off.

It turns out one of the stainless burner tubes was corroded.

Well here I am. I found this forum searching for information about renovating my old grill.

I am in the process and finishing the renovation, found some good information here and punted on the rest.

And yeah, around the time we bought this grill, a Weber advertising campaign slogan was “buy your last grill first”. Since I am kinda old now, it turns out that might have been an example of truth in advertising, lol.

Cheers

Welcome John,

30 years owning a Redhead 1000. That's awesome.

I've learned a ton from the group here. Looking forward to seeing your renovation.

I hope you’ve documented with before and during pics. We would love to see them!

I’ve got 25 years with mine, I was in 8th grade when my dad got it and I’ve cooked majority on it. And it’s just as reliable today as the day it was new. Really was a great purchase.

Thanks Dan.

I will post some details and photographs when I get it wrapped up.

It really is amazing how well this grill lasted with very little maintenance. The stand frame members were rusted through in spots, but wire brush and repainting and everything went back together pretty solidly.

Glad to be part of this forum.

Welcome John! I found my way here the same way as you, looking for restoration help for my 1998 Genesis grill. I've learned a ton here and love interacting with the great people here. Never hesitate to ask a question and post lots of pictures of that grill!

Hey Tim,

I haven’t taken too many before photos, but took many tonight as I was re-assembling the grill.

Here are a few I took about 5 years ago E5FA1C93-F470-493C-BDC5-16F544E0BB28.jpeg6957EBD0-443C-42F7-8487-22F6B539031F.jpeg

It’s looking a little better now though, with some fresh paint and new parts.

Not sure if you've seen this, but there is a trove of info here:

Dan, it sounds like John is pretty much done with his restoration and we're just waiting for some pics!

Welcome from Northern NJ. I bought that same grill at around the same time you did but I wasn't smart enough to think of refurbishing it when things wore out and just tossed it and bought another Weber (blue with thermometer in middle of hood, don't remember model). Gave that to my brother when my family got bigger and bought the big Weber Summit.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcoming.

@DanHoo - I will browse the link you posted this weekend-

Thanks Dan.

Much to see in those threads, and I will start a thread with my restoration once I have the time to do a proper write up, but I figured I would post some photos to date since it’s going to take some time:

I thought it was a good find- I found it at a place called bar b que barn.

They had one in stock, and judging from the dust on it it was there for quite some time- pristine though

That's a great find, I've been looking for one for so long I have the part # memorized. I did find a brand new control panel with igniter switch on ebay last year, that was my big score.
