Buy your last grill first

I have come to the conclusion after many projects that the last 10% usually takes 50% of the time, if that makes any sense.

I didn’t address the drip pan until tonight, and to my surprise it’s in pretty good condition:

A little wire brush and it’s pretty solid still.

I misplaced the flat cover plate that goes in front of the burners, but had picked up a more recent edition and it fits just fine

That’s it until next week- have plans this weekend.

Welcome and thanks for the pics and comments! I never heard that title ad, but wish I had. Starting in the same time frame, I've had a series of cheap grills. Never did more than hotdogs and burgers and can't claim any great success. Finally around 2000 I bought my first recommended "quality" Brinkman and struggled for several years with that POS (not a nice comment). But I began reading grill forums during that time and at last decided to go for a Genesis -- the three east-west burner type. What a huge and immediate difference! I could actually cook and began to branch out to various meats etc with good success. But only a couple of years later, I was lured by the great forum reviews of the new front to back burner Genesis with sear burner that I've had now for 12 years. Another big step up in grilling experience! So, yes, that ad claim you saw was true and valid. I can only wish I did it earlier and be thankful I finally got there.

Back to your story, John, in our many road trips around the country, I've had occasion to grill on one of those Gennie 1000s and, despite age or condition, found them to be a pleasure to work with. Congrats on your successes!

Greetings from New Jersey.

I met my future wife in 1988, and she thought it was a little weird that I didn’t own a TV- I liked her enough and decided to rectify that- we went to the local appliance chain one night after work.

Leaving the store we passed a woman who asked us if we wanted a cookie? Sure- she lifted up the lid of a grill and got two fresh baked cookies and handed them to us. They were pretty good- fast forward three years and we got married- bought a house and eventually were flush enough to buy a barbecue grill- that demonstration three years earlier really stuck in my head and off we went and bought a Genesis 1000 in red.

A really great grill, used it all four seasons and only replaced the original steel grates and flavorizer bars.

Never thought too much about it, but this past spring the grill wasn’t heating to my satisfaction- I thought it might have been the drip pan which wasn’t on the grill anymore since the holder bars rusted off.

It turns out one of the stainless burner tubes was corroded.

Well here I am. I found this forum searching for information about renovating my old grill.

I am in the process and finishing the renovation, found some good information here and punted on the rest.

And yeah, around the time we bought this grill, a Weber advertising campaign slogan was “buy your last grill first”. Since I am kinda old now, it turns out that might have been an example of truth in advertising, lol.

Cheers
Welcome John, enjoy your red Weber!

Hi John, welcome from PA! You’ve come to the right place, lots of great people and information here. I was just in your area recently went to lunch at On the Deck
Hey Duane,

Somehow I missed your post.

On the Deck is a great restaurant. Been there a few times. Right around the corner from my house, so to speak.

Cheers

Thank you @RichPB (richlife)

My wife and I have made good use out of this grill through the years sticking to the basics.

One year we roasted a Thanksgiving turkey on the grill and it was delicious, but mostly steaks, chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs.

Not a connoisseur by any means but since I joined this forum I am seeing possibilities of expanding our grilling repertoire.

Happy to have found this forum.

Cheers

You've certainly found the right place to expand your horizons. I've participated in several grilling/smoking related forums but only here at TVWB and one other (now defunct) did I really feel at home. Sometimes my participation here is irregular, but I always come back, find some old virtual friends and always meet new ones who welcome me back.

You have a great and venerable grill. I can say for sure that if it can be cooked, it can be grilled -- usually better. You may want to make some mods or additions (like a second level grate -- pizza and many other things come to mind), but enjoy your grill to the max.

Still learning the ropes at tvwbb, and still making the finishing touches on old Genny, but back to grilling anyway.

When my wife and I started our family, we decided that she would be a stay at home mom and manage on my carpenters salary.

We lived a very basic life, and that included living in a well insulated house with no air conditioning. We grilled all summer basically so as to not make any heat in the house. In 2014, we were told we needed air conditioning for our daughter who was healthy but had a heart defect that meant she shouldn’t be subject to too much heat.

Central air was installed from scratch in July. Wow- that was a major undertaking in our split level house.

We made the adjustment quickly and grilled less.

I only thought of that this week, and it’s been really hot/ humid in New Jersey.

My wife and I decided we need to start grilling more.
