Breaking in the new toy

Last weekend I went over the the coast to do some fishing. As luck would have it my Sous Chef forgot to pack underwear. Normally in a situation like this I would stop at Fred Meyers, but I happened to be near a Walmart Superstore. I remembered everyone mentioning that the WSM 14.5 was dirt cheap so I stopped in. Sure enough there were two left on the shelf in the box, $99.00. Got so excited I almost forgot the underwear.

Of course I had to assemble it at the motel!

I wanted to fire this up last night, but the ex-vegetarian wife wanted salad. So tonight is the night.

I found a nice Chuck cross rib roast. Have it marinating in Henderson's Relish. Will be rubbing with SPOG. KBB and cherry. Will go low and slow to maximize the smoke. Might do some smokey Au Jus we'll see.

Few more hours and I can get this going!

You almost forgot the underwear... haha that's something I would do. Get too excited and forget what I went there for. I saw 3 at Walmart yesterday. I was very temped to buy one, but would be a gift for someone. I don't have anymore room on my patio. Plus I would have to sleep in it if you know what I mean.

Pretty much the same thing I did. Forgiveness is easier than permission.
 
Pat, I hear you but if I even start to talk BBQ, they first thing she says is moratorium on BBQ spending with the exception of meat and charcoal. In this case, forgiveness would be hard to comeby.

Same boat as you (pun intended) Barb has made it clear no more grills of any kind. With nine grills and smokers that take up almost half of our small back yard I can't build an argument for another one.

Wait getting a 14" WSM is the first step to downsizing. Yeah that's it! See everyone can get one if you use that philosophy!!!
 
Welcome to the 14.5 club! lol. Your going to enjoy using it. Nice catch there too!!! Looking forward to seeing how your roast turns out, I'm sure it will be great!!! :)

My wife only thinks I have 4 grills. I only keep two on the patio, the rest are in the overhead storage in the garage. I have a big birthday coming up, 50. I would like a Jumbo Joe to round out the collection. When she asks me what I want, I'm going to start with the JJ. If she gives me the look, I'm going to ask for a Maverick. If she gives me the look again, I'm going to ask her for a fishing boat.
 
Case, you are making me very hungry. Send a plate to SoCal please. Great way to break in that WSM14. Really want one but will have to wait for a while. SWMBO must be obeyed. I think I will start publishing my Christmas list early.

Knowing my wife, she will just get it with our adult daughters form Amazon. For a good deal, I will have to be involved. But of course, I will keep her updated on a Craigslist hunt.

Great looking roast! Did you like the 14.5 WSM better than one of your many mini's? I dont think anybody on this forum has used a mini more than you have. I'd be very interested in your opinion on the comparison of the two.
