Hello Everyone, hope everyone is doing well !!
Have not been here in at least few months. Work, kids, keep me busy.
My brother in law dropped off a Summit he got for free. I rebuilt a Genesis Silver for him few years back and it works good. He got the Summit from a coworker free. Is NG. He wants me to restore it and convert to LP. I got lots of pics, please see attached. His coworker said used it once few year back and it worked. How much expense there will be to get it to LP get parts, burners, flavor bars, etc. Is it worth it ? I used to read the Summit threads how they are not worth restoring and such but don’t t recall what. So if anyone can help what it would take $$$ to get it going or is not worth it i appreciate it. Please see pics.

Hey Chris! Great to hear from you. I know what you mean about busy🥴.

That is a second generation Summit Silver I think, but with the smoker box and rear infrared burner. So it’s a nice one, just not with the better grates. These things are money traps, so your friend really needs to think about whether he is up for all the expensive parts you will need. There’s a reason they are often sold super cheap or even given away.

Before you do anything else, look very carefully at the front inside where the burners enter the firebox. The dark metal (porcelain plated steel - not aluminum) I will bet already has burn-through rust holes. If it does you are looking at a whole new firebox - if you can even get one. A lot easier - and cheaper to restore a classic Genesis - even two Genesis grills would cost less than fixing this one.

If you want, PM me with you phone number and a good time to talk.

I agree with Jon. The second thing is converting to LP. Unless you can find a donor grill to grab the LP Manifold from, that is an expensive proposition if you can even buy them any more. Changing only the orifices is a sketchy proposition.

So actually converting that from to LP may be the easiest and cheapest part to do. Most if not all those grills had the continuously variable type valves. Odds are the firebox is rusted out. Also it will be a miracle if you can find another one. If the friend/brother is the original owner a call to Weber MIGHT score a new fire box. If so you're golden and can proceed. The flalvorizers for those are EXPEN$IVE. Because they're welded assemblies. If you can even find them anymore. They are truly rabbit holes so approach with extreme caution

Flavorizers are insanely expensive if you can find as LMichaels says. I may get a year out of mine before I need to replace.

Have you gone ahead with the restoration? I would be interested to see some pics. I’m about 98% complete with mine, rotisserie burner has me baffled as to why it won’t stay lit.
