So this morning I got word of a Weber sitting on the curb. Upon arrival I saw it was yet another hole in the head that I guess I desperately needed. I’ve been wanting to get after a deep box project for a while, prior to taking on one of my nicer 1/2/2000’s.

It was missing the control panel that I’ve got a couple of stashed away. Pretty sure it’s an 8006 panel.

The valves were impossible to turn, and I wonder if this was a project grill or an angered discard by a long time owner, since the inside was pretty clean, no flavor bars and the tank scale seems to have been soaked in penetrating oil. One half of the wing nut is snapped off.

The grease tray and drip pan ane incredible for a deep box. Among the best I’ve seen. The Z Bars and durawood are not perfect, but pretty good for a 30 year old grill. I have a lot of extra durawood and Z bars of these turn out to be trash. This one should hopefully have a better turn around than my last Gold C project. But wanted to make a thread, since it’s my first deep box.

Lid has some fade, but not horrible. Looks better in person than the picture.

Cheers 🍻

So I have enough cleaned and repainted hardware to assemble at least 3 grills. But I wanted this one to be different. I wanted to try and use everything that came with it so I kept it all together during disassembly. As some of you know my mom passed away just before Christmas time. It was a horrible time. But she was a supporter of this crazy Weberitis I have, and she was happy for me (her family had the hardware store that sold Weber’s that I’ve mentioned many times on here).

Well she was a lover of all things shamrock and Irish (we’re partially Irish by blood, on both mom and dad’s side). I never noticed this until today. There appear to be little shamrocks on the 6 - 1/2” bolts that hold the frame together. When I saw that I got choked up and KNEW I had to keep that goal.

There is other unrelated grill hardware in the pic.

I think the dots are the month and the 5 the last digit of the year. I remember seeing that somewhere, but I guess I could still be wrong.

Here's mine.

Can’t wait to see how it turns out, but I just wanted to mention one of my mistakes and help others avoid it:

Be careful pressure washing the Durawood (if you choose to). I got too close and too narrow of a stream on one of mine and it shredded the Durawood up pretty badly. I mean, it’s still “fine” functionally, but doesn’t look the greatest anymore.

I actually wanted to flip the slats over because the other side of them is perfect, but I don’t know how I would fill the exposed screw holes without it being pretty noticeable.

I was thinking about this before, and then thought more about it today. I wonder what a dab of clear silicone in them would look like?

Well, insomnia struck this morning. So I headed in to work on the 1000. The frame looked rougher than it did after I got all the gunk off and was able to take a closer look. Nothing required replacement. But a fair amount of grinding and wire wheeling was necessary. A good amount of feathering was also needed.

Most places should be concealed by the cookbox, but I still wanted to do it right and learn a bit about the paint on these older frames. It’s certainly thicker than what was on the gold C I did.

Time for some caffeine if this thing is getting painted today!

Caffeine kicked in! Letting the valves sit in penetrating oil overnight. Working on the z bars and hardware for the tables and bottom.

The z bars take a long time to blast and my ADD only lets me focus on those for a little bit at a time.

I have a feeling I am going to crash hard this afternoon 🤣

I ended up stripping them before blasting. A lot more messy, but made blasting a piece of cake. I did a before, during and after of one of the rougher looking ones. I was able to use all but one the original Z bars.
