'95 Genesis 1000 LX Build - Not a Keeper

Before I got my first Weber, a $25 Silver A, I stumbled on a video of a guy doing a beautiful job rolling paint on a firebox. I can't find the video but that rehab inspired me to go pick it up. Ends up the firebox and end caps cleaned up well but the idea of rolling those surfaces if needed kept me from getting a lesser grill. It also led me to this great group of (old) Weber enthusiasts!

That's really cool Ed!!
Glad you're here

A couple small details to wrap up on it, but I think I’m liking the red… a lot

Big thanks to all of you guys for your inspiration and enablationing (I just made that word up), but a big shout to @Jon Tofte for these awesome stickers that add SO much detail to what can be an overlooked part of these grills. And @Steve Hoch for your advice and insight with these older grills. I’ll be swearing off these slat grills for a little while and try and shift focus to the pile of B’s I have out back.

This one was fun. And frustrating. But I’m very happy with how this turned out.

Looks great Cody! Looking forward to seeing more slat grills from you
If a box of slats for an LX shows up on my porch, I’ll start on one that day. Until then, I’m taking a break!

All kidding aside, I thought about this tonight. The next factory Z bars I use, before I paint them I’d drill tiny weep holes right bear the bend, in line with the existing holes

yup, I haven’t decided if I want to switch the control panel for a better one. This one has some fade, and I have to switch the fitting for the regulator.
Never flip a grill with your best control panel, especially on a Genesis 1000. Always keep the best one for yourself. You may eventually wake up and decide to make a nice Genesis 1000-5000 for yourself.

I usually wrap the igniter wires around the manifold arm (the one that connects to the cookbox). Is there any reason to or not to do that?

On only one grill I ever came across there was a little plastic clip in the shape of a 3. One loop clipped onto that manifold post arm, and the wires slid into the other loop. I don’t know if someone added that, or if certain models came with the clip.

Yeah. I forgot to put that clip on. I’ve got a few of them in my bin at work. That’s one bad part about having two places to work on them! I have a little punch list I’ve got before I list it. But thanks, I love how detail oriented people are on here!

It took a couple of (1 bad, 1 flipper) 1000LX’s to get enough durawood slats to make my keeper ( not forever because of my age) grill. They are all held by stainless zbars from Dave Santana.

I have had some very intrusive thoughts about durawood and my keeper SS 🤔 if I went that route (with SS Z bars) I would fab up SS frame ends.

Had to call an audible and use my last pristine fade-free black lid. The red one has that funky look on the inside and for going as far as I went with this it was just too bothersome to me. I didn’t want to full send my two black lids so soon. But I think this grill warrants it.

I’m also debating if I want to throw the new in box 1000 handle on it.

I’m having a very hard time listing this one…

I know what you mean about those lids with that crap on the inside. I don't discard a lid because of that, but it is very annoying to have a perfect looking lid on the outside only to scrape away the carbon coating on the inside and find that.

So, are you keeping that 1000?

I wonder if they developed that over time? Because I would think the QC department would’ve said “NOPE” to that.
