I can't be the only one who dislikes the middle of the cooking area having the seam?

If grates were meant to be a more permanent piece on a grill, I would certainly like the one piece. On my Q220, I have the stainless two piece grates and I indeed welded them together. But they only weight about 1/4 and are much smaller than a set of 9mm genesis grates.

I’m not a math major, but with the numbers I came up with, I couldn’t buy the rod for under $100

I just built a set of grates out of 1/4" SS304, about 18"x31", for less than $50 in steel. 1/2" spacing, which might be more than people want. 3/8".....off the cuff, less than $10 more, and 1/4" gaps, $15-20 more.

These grates are going into use in 10 days. I'll post up pics after I get back from a road trip.

1/4" is only 6.35mm. I would want at least 7mm rods in grates. How much do you think you could build a set of 9mm grates for with 9mm spacing.

I would love a one piece grate 7mm rods with 1/4" spacing. Even if it had a center support, that wouldn't bother me. I don't mind the support rod.

I love how men are obsessed with stainless steel grades and rod thickness So, what is more important? the 9mm vs 7mm or the spacing in between rods? is a one piece grate better than the traditional two piece grate? im not even gonna mention the pesky middle support rod!!

Within reason a better spaced out 1/4 rod grate is WAY better than one made of 3/8" but with 1/2" spacing. That's my story and I am sticking to it

I have a Yoder 24" x 48" charcoal grill. After several years, I've burned through the original mild steel flattened expanded sheet grates. Got tired of eating rust.

Equipment....

Miller 400 welder. 240V 50A production welder
3M Speedglas autodarkening helmet.
Fixture table, 24"x48" Fabtop w/ legs, casters and a few accessories. Shout out to https://weldtables.com
Power bandsaw, 4"x6", from Harbor Freight with a good bimetallic blade
Grinding wheels on 4.5" grinders from Pferd-USA. Won't use anything else
Tungsten-carbide rotary chamfer tool sourced from Amazon
