2nd Attempt at Plank Grilled Salmon

Jerome D.

TVWBB All-Star
For dinner tonight, I made golden alder wood planked salmon, incorporating many of the helpful suggestions (e.g. preheating the plank) made by fellow TVWBB'ers after the first time I made it. Needless to say, my results improved from the last time. Anyway, enough talk ... on to the photos!

Here's a shot of the raw salmon right before it went on the grill. For seasoning, I used an oddball blend of spices that I just threw together at the last minute (salt, pepper, guajillo & ancho chile powders, Mexican oregano, powdered bay leaf, garlic powder, onion powder, dried Meyer lemon peel).

The obligatory action shot. The black spot on the side of the salmon is just a shadow...don't worry, I didn't burn it :p

All finished cooking.

And finally, a plated shot.

Thanks for stopping by!

Been scared to try it! Your looks great! Cook time and grill temps please sir?

Hi Adam, I too was intimidated at first by plank grilling, but it actually turned out to be quite easy. I soaked the plank in water for a few hours, then pre-heated the gas grill to 500F. Once the grill was hot enough, I turned off the middle burner, placed the plank on the grates, closed the lid, and pre-heated the plank until I saw a little smoke. Then I simply placed the fish on the hot plank, closed the lid, and 20 minutes later it was cooked to my liking (I prefer salmon slightly rare in the middle).

I did four Wild Alaskan Salmon filets on the plank (cedar) this past Saturday. It is always a hit in this household! I flat love the stuff, hot or cold. I always try to do extra so we'll have left overs for cold, smoked salmon (grilled, then chilled:cool:).

By the way, GFS had a sale on wild salmon individually frozen filets at $5.00 per lb. I bought a five pound bag. The last Salmon I did before this last cook, was in North Carolina and I paid $15.00 per lb. That's quite a difference. It'll be interesting to see how the new salmon compares to the old...

Keep on smokin',

Very nice Jerome. Great pics :) I have a cedar plank just waiting for a piece of Salmon. Now I just have to give it a shot before snow flies!!
