Less than 20 bucks and an hour of work (should've been less, but it was 15F outside), and I've managed to put together a smaller charcoal ring for my 22.5" model.
This will serve well for smaller, shorter cooks like ribs where I don't need to put a whole bag in. Stock dimensions of the 18" model are 14" across, 5" high. I took a 12x24 strip of 18ga expanded metal from Home Depot.
Cut it down the middle (6" height), then pound down the sharp portions with a hammer, and finally bolt the 2 strips together (nut, 2 washers, bolt). For this one, I went with 13" across by 6" high, slightly narrower but taller than the stock 18" model ring.
