$150 for a Genesis Gold C on CL?

I found this forum (which is great by the way) because my 7 year old junk brand gasser finally disintegrated. I was tired of buying junk and decided to do a little research on the best gas grills and that led me here :)

A new Weber at full retail price is not an option for me right now so I am looking on Craigslist.

I have to admit I am intrigued by the thought of mildly refurbishing an older model if I can get one at a great price.

I found what I believe to be a Genesis Gold C (possibly a 2001 or 2002) but I don't know if $150 is a great deal?

I also may be able to get a brand new Spirit E210 for $250 but that one is not a sure thing.

Is $150 for a 13 year old Gold C a good deal?

Is the E210 for $250 a better deal?

Update: I just realized the Gold C I was looking at is natural gas which won't work for me. Back to the drawing board.......

150 for a gold C is a screamin deal, you won't see cheaper. I paid 150 for a silver C about 5 years ago and it's a champ, and you can use the side burner to light your chimney. Right now there's a silver C listed on Denver CL for 225.

You CAN replace the burner manifolds and the regulator hose to retrofit to LP gas, but I've not done it so I shouldn't offer any advice about that process.

Welcome aboard JR!

Don't know how far this would be for you, but might be a good deal at $55 in Imperial, MO.

Well, howdy neighbor! I am actually on the Illinois side of the river (O'Fallon) but Imperial may be doable. The one you linked to looks like it would be a good option. I am excited about taking something that needs a little TLC and making it great again.....and saving a little money will be nice too!

I have really enjoyed some of the other posts where people refurbed older models.

JR,
I think it's the second time they have ran the ad, so a fifty dollar bill might take it.
A very good deal if it doesn't need much if anything to get cookin' on it.
Good luck if you go for it!

Thanks for the heads up. It looks promising. I may ask for some additional pictures and, if it looks good, drive over this weekend to take a look at it. Are you able to tell from the picture what year and model it may be? I am still new at this but am guessing a late 90's Genesis?

You're welcome.
Sorry, I'm not up on years/models.
I'm a charcoal guy, but did fix up a gasser for my son.
Paid $30 for it, added new flavor bars and igniter for a grand total of about $100.

Personally, I put a max value of $250 on a Genesis Gold/Silver C, $200 for a Gold/Silver B and about $150 for a A. That's absolute total out of pocket. How much I'd pay for a specific grill depends on what needs to be fixed/replaced. If the frame is rusted badly, I walk away unless it's stupidly cheap and I want it for a parts grill. If all it needs is a cleanup and new flavorizer bars, I subtract the cost of the bars from the aforementioned numbers and that tells me how much I'm willing to pay. If it also needs grates, that cost has to be factored in as well, especially as I will want PCI grates which are costly.

Also, does the grill come with a tank ? That's worth $20 or so around here. Don't forget to factor in the warming rack and basket if you will use them as those will also add to the cost. About the only thing that I don't add into the calculation is the cost of supplies for the rehab such as degreaser, sanding wheels or a can of high temp spray paint.

Weber no longer sells manifolds for conversions. Not sure if you can get one from ereplacements and the like, but if you can, they are fairly expensive.

Thank you DaveW! I am new at this so your post is extremely helpful. I didn't really have an idea what I should be looking at in terms of price.

With your comments in mind, I think I am going to take a look at the one below. The guy is asking $80 and says it works fine. It appears to be an older Genesis Silver C. I think the burner looks ok in his picture but I can't tell about the flavorizer Bars or grates. This may be an ok one that doesn't require a lot of work to keep it running....which would be perfect for my first Weber.

You're welcome JR. That one looks to be a good candidate for a restore. Definitely need to replace the flavorizer bars. There's a guy named RCPlanebuyer on Ebay who makes some really nice bars that will last a real long time. If you want, I can give you his direct contact info. You can get cheaper bars, but might have to replace them sooner. It's a cash flow vs total value kind of thing.

The grate in the pic appears to have some life left in it. Burners appear solid, but ideally you'd want to see how well they burn. If at all possible you want to check the valves to make sure there are no problems with them as well. Ask the seller if they have a propane tank they can hook up to test the valves and the burner tubes. Also, be sure to check the frame out very carefully. Small amounts of surface rust isn't a big deal, just make sure that it's not rusted through.

Thanks for the tip! I was able to find RCPlanebuyer's Ebay Store and it sure looks like he makes some quality products. I will keep him in mind. I have a lead on new-in-box Weber stainless grills and flavorizer bars that I believe will fit this grill. If it works out I will have the grill listed above, a used grill cover, new SS grates, and new SS flavorizer bars and will be out a total of $145, not including cleanup costs. That is about all I can spend right now anyway so it might work out perfectly. If it does, I will be sure to let you all know. Thanks again for the help everyone!

One additional question. I have done a bit of reading and some people suggest using oven cleaner on the inside of the box, some people use engine degreaser (not sure I'm comfortable with this one), and some just use a power washer and elbow grease. Do you all have a preference about the best method for cleaning the inside of the box?

UPDATE: I just read Mary Teal's thread from last fall regarding her rehab of a Silver C. All of my questions were answered in her thread.

Inside the firebox ? Angle grinder ;). Much easier than any kind of cleaner. When finished, spray with some Pam and fire the grill up to season it.
