05 Summit Platinum\Genesis Platinum Frankengrill Build Thread

Yep, in several ways, these short-lived '05-'06 Platinum Genesis and Summit grills represented a high watermark for Weber. The only ones with real, quality stainless frames. Not even the earliest Genesis or Summit grills were built that robustly. These were the grills to have in South Florida - or any locale with high humidity and/or salt air.

I transplanted a rebuilt Summit Gold D4 (new firebox and lid replaced by Weber under warranty) into a Summit Platinum frame. The stainless steal frames clean up like new with a little elbow grease! Hoping to get another 15 years out of this one before the firebox rust strikes again!Plat frame.jpegPlat frame1.jpeg

Ok! Update time!

Took the Summit cart over to a local metal shop to buy some stainless tube. He ended up offering to weld the pieces for me and I gladly paid his $40 fee for the service. Out the door for under $100, including a nice piece of trim for the front I'll mock up later.

He only had 1" stock, but we just mounted it inside to make everything line up.

Got back home and the Genesis firebox BARELY fit. I'm about 1/8" too wide on the frame somehow. I think the whole cart must be warped, because I measured it perfect. The solution is to bolt a L piece behind the firebox to fill the gap and line everything up.

I'll also run a piece of L front to back and mount the firebox bolt there.

Oh. OK that is the summit frame. Cool.
As long as you were doing all that fabricating, you should have considered doing a 13 flavorizer bar deep box.

One of my early restorations was a deep box Genesis 1000 with wooden shelves. I used it for a bit and then gave it to a friend for safe keeping.

I've been very happy with my 05 Platinum, especially considering I was able to get a brand new firebox under warranty last year and added some RPB flavorizers. I personally find the sear better on it than the 13 bar too.

If I can find one, I'll drop a 13 bar into the old platinum frame and make a 2nd dream grill.

I have a SS Genesis Platinum frame that I intend to consider converting to a deep firebox if it looks doable.

Yah Ed, I really want to. I just need to drag the SS Platinum frame up and then drop a Deep box in it to get an idea what it will take. One thing that could be a killer is if the 13 bar deep cook box is too wide, front to back, for the frame. I don't know what the size of each are off hand. But if the deep box is bigger, then it pretty much makes it a no go for me.

Bruce, I don't think there is any difference front to back - just side to side. Otherwise all the other trays and everything would have had to be changed in width. Your problem, I think, will be extending the frame to accommodate that extra "E-W" width.

Brandon, That's one really cool project. You will have achieved the "ultimate" Genesis grill that we have talked about here from time to time, 5 bar box not withstanding. Put a set of GrillGrates on there and you can eliminate almost all flare-ups  .

Jon and Ed: I just dropped a deep box on an empty Silver B frame I am working on. You are right, it does fit front to back. I think this is going to be doable despite the side to side difference in the cook boxes. The extended frame on the Platinum C will give me the room to work, but it might mean losing the extra side table and swing table on the right unless I patch in a couple inches to the end of the frame rails. I guess I would have to move the bracket for the igniter as well....Hmmmm. Gonna be a lot of work.

Hmmmmm, so you are thinking I cut out the left cross member that the cook box bolts to and move it to the left a bit less than an inch. Then move the igniter bracket further to match up with the igniter switch in the panel. Then that would probably pull the the right side table over an inch or so. Hmmmm, thanks for the brainstorming Ed.
Once I get the frame up in the driveway and actually drop a cook box, control panel and side tables on it, I think I will be better able to visualize how it all might work out.

I think, once you cut that xmember out on the left, it will be evident what needs to be done. If you do it right, and it doesn't work, you can weld the xmember back in again...no harm, no foul. Ain't nothing to it but to do it.

Angle iron is a resolution. I'll tap a couple of bolts in to secure it.

So the same thing to create the H and bolt the firebox and we are off to the races.
