I did not know you could paint the lids on these. This may be a good side grill for veggies! Make sure to check the speed on any grinder. Mine is cordless low rpm and it made the job a lot harder to clean.

Free is always a good find! (That is how I got mine also. ;) If it starts to flake you can try to remove it, the color of the original hook looked pretty good! Now you have a grill for many years to come! Congrats!

Mostly just an angle grinder and wire cup brush. That gets most of the stuff off. Some guys are trying the Dawn power dissolver product (check out the Jr post that someone is showing and it looks to do a good job!)

On the one I restored my lid and firebox were both that way. Like Larry said, wire brush it off, paint it up and you are good to go!
