    *NEW* Maverick ET-732

I totally agree that the probe leads on the ET-73 and new 732 are too short. I hope that an engineer with Redi-Check reads this and decides to include longer leads as standard equipment with each unit. I also use a Guru Digi-Q, and as standard lengths, each probe lead is well over twice as long...

    *NEW* Maverick ET-732

Chuck, I may be slightly off, but it seems to me the ET-732 probe wires are about 36 inches long. They are the same length as the ones with my old ET-73 model, but the new probe wires are thicker in diameter and seem more substantial.

    *NEW* Maverick ET-732

I have a new Maverick ET-732 and love this improved version over the old 73's. I previously used the guru eyelets, and quickly found the new probes won't fit thru. I went to Lowe's Home Improvement, and found a pack of hollow, threaded metal shafts in the lamp repair section. There were...

    Maverick 732

I got mine from Finney as well. Great guy to deal with and shipped fast to me. Maverick works like a champ.

    BBQ Guru Digi-Q DX

Hey Tim, Got Guru back yesterday. Company says circuit board had issues so they replaced the board. Works fine so far, but will test on WSM next weekend for the real deal. Heading to Hardeeville to work on that new event which is same weekend as Hartsville. I'd rather go to Hartsville since...

    BBQ Guru Digi-Q DX

Thanks guys. When I get the Guru back from repairs I'm sure I will feel better about the whole thing. Maybe its just one of those odd electronic problems that can easily be repaired or replaced. And yes, the folks at Guru were very responsive on the phone so far. I'll post soon when I get...

    BBQ Guru Digi-Q DX

I have had my Guru for several months and used it maybe 6 or 7 times. Last two times I have had controller issues where the digital readout reads all 88888888's and hangs up. Switching between pit and probe temps hangs it up as well as setting the pit temps up or down. I just sent it back to...

    Seeking advice on a thermometer

Just went to Lowes Home Improvement and found a packet of hollow "nipples" that contain several of them cut in various lengths, and I will use the shortest one which may be half inch long. Both ET-732 probes fit easily thru one of them. Also found a pack of lock nuts which will secure it in...

    Seeking advice on a thermometer

Mike/Tim; I use two devices that necessitate running probes into the WSM smoker body. I bought and installed one set of Guru eyelets: one set has two eyelets in the pak. My Guru Digi-Q DX temp controller system uses both a pit probe and a food probe. Both of these Guru probes can go thru one...

    Seeking advice on a thermometer

Tim, It all boils down to what makes you happy, and my guess is that BBQ equipment makes you happy! I have 3 older ET-73's and just got in a new ET-732. I am totally impressed with it. I use Guru eyelets to run the probes into the smoker since I dont want to crimp the leads under the lid...

    Wireless thermometers and comps

I just purchased the new ET-732 from Chris Finney of Iron Pig BBQ (his post is right above mine) and the new Maverick is amazing. It stays connected much better than the old 73's did, plus warns you if it drops the signal. I was totally impressed with the results and the improvements. Now I'm...

Excessive Ash with DiqiQ DX and 10 CFM fan

I use virtaully the same set-up as described, but have no ash issues. I keep the opening of the deflector clean, and have it pointing downward. If I had this problem, I would clean the deflector opening and try pointing the opening sideways so it would swirl the air in the chamber in a...

    coffee bean smoke?

Give ground coffee a try in your next rub, Nathan. You may enjoy the subtle bitterness it gives the bark on a pork shoulder or butt. Coffee adds a depth and richness to other foods that I find pleasant. In tomato based sauces, I often add a half cup of leftover black coffee if available. If...

    Brined Chicken

Good looking bird Ben. I did a chicken cook on Sunday, but changed my game plan somewhat. I got a late start, so getting the WSM ready seemed a hassle. I have a Traeger pellet grill, but have always felt the smoke flavor was too low in it. However, I experimented with a perforated foil pouch...

    coffee bean smoke?

I saw that same episode of Triple D and considered what flavors might develop when you smoke coffee beans. The bread in the smoke trick sounds like a great test. Balancing flavor profiles makes great BBQ, and coffee certainly takes care of part of the bitter component. Dry cocao powder is...

    Brined Chicken

All good ideas. Will rub canola oil on skin as I put on grate. I use an ATC device (Guru) so getting to and maintaining a high temp is usually no problem. Think I will go for 350 and see how this cook goes.

    I got it! Maverick ET-732

I like my old ET-73, but have always felt it had range issues as well as disconnect issues. Seems the new ET-732 unit has solved this situation. However, I really want my probes to go thru the guru eyelets I have installed, Do you think opening up the eyelets with a drill bit will allow the...

    Brined Chicken

Good tips Dave. I should have realized air drying the birds in the fridge will help remove moisture in the skin which will contribute to that rubbery texture I want to avoid. Excellent response. Thanks!

    Brined Chicken

I am brining two 3.5 lb chickens to smoke/cook whole on my WSM. I use a Guru for temp control. Two questions.... What temp will be best to cook the birds whole and give me a good crispy skin while maintaining moisture in the meat? Since I will have a fairly short burn time, should I put one...

    Brining/injecting a butt?

Richard, Lots of competition cookers inject due to timing constraints. Some event organizers provide butts to the cook teams, and usually very shortly before they need to be on the pit. This timing issue forces injections to be used instead of brining. I have tried both methods, and feel...
