WSM Smoker Jacket

Alan, welcome to the party. I live in Calif but I would say from others stories, that it is not necessary to use the jacket at any temp. However logic states that you will maintain your smokers internal temp better and use less coal if you use the blanket. Any other device that you create to minimize temp fluctuation and loss will benefit. There have been those who use tents, wooden shacks, and windbreaks etc.

Happy Smokin' all winter long.

It really isn't about temp. The jacket helps more from creating a windbreak. If you can get your WSM out of the wind or build yourself a cheaper wind break, you can skip the jacket.

Alan the jacket that BBQ Guru sells is called the Silver Bullet Jacket, and usually it's used with an automatic temp controller like the DigiQ II. I use it a lot in the winter and whenever it's windy and it does make a difference. However, if wind is the issue you can take care of the problem with a good windbreak.

I have the Guru jackets in both sizes. The jackets make a good wind break and help with rain. The improved fuel economy is a big plus.

The only real drawback is how dirty your WSM can get using them.
