WSM Design Changes

I am not sure if this belongs in this section or the Modifications section but here goes. I am curious if the design on the WSM 22.5 has changed. To be specific, the area where the bottom section connects to the middle section. I just got my WSM and ordered the nomex gasket kit and was confused about where to install the bottem gasket. I contacted Justin from www.bbqgaskets.com and he responded within 30 minutes. Good customer support. The way he described the lower gasket install leads me to believe the design of the WSM in that area has changed. I would love to see pictures or comments the older and newer units. This is not a big deal, but it has gotten me curious. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If the moderator feels this should be in the mods section, feel free to move it.

Thanks, Bob

I don't count this as a design change but they did start including (6) more fiber washer for attaching between the legs and the outside of the charcoal bowl. I noticed that my 2 year old 18.5" did not include them and it's not shown in the old manual. Wonder if there were problems cropping up with out them?? My 1 wk old 22 had them included and they are shown in the manual for installation.

Good point Bryon, I always thought the fiber washers were used as a buffer between metal to metal and the legs would take the brunt of that. My 08 18.5" only had them at the grate straps which I thought was odd.

Bob have a read of this. I deal with Jason too. I have sent him pics and he has read this post.

I think I have seen it and will be running the WSM this weekend at high heat. Even with deciding the best approach to line the bottom half, I can tell that it will seal really well. I am looking forward to trying it now that I have done the basic few mods I wanted to do when the WSM arrived early this week. The problem with figuring the best approach with the lower section is why I am curious if the lower sections have been changed very much.

Thanks for the link.

I did as well. I have not had any issues with the 18 but it makes you wonder about the change
