WSM Blankets...

I'm wondering if anyone actually produces blankets for WSMs? I'm not talking about Home Depot water heater insulation...I mean real blankets fitted for WSMs.

If you want to save some $$ buy a 8' x 6' welding blanket, and 4 large spring loaded metal clips (look like giant clothes pins). Wrap the welding blanket around your WSM and clip the ends together.

Blanket costs $35-$45, clips are $1-$2 each, and best of all it folds up nice and small when you don't need it in the summer. I have ran my 22.5" WSM in 35°-40° weather with a gusty wind at 250° with 1 vent half way open for over 12 hrs. on half a ring of charcoal (approx. 10 lbs.)

Great tip. Thanks.

Has anyone used or seen the Guru blanket? It looks like it has to be removed anytime you have to tend the smoker. There must be ventilation for the dome vent?

Thanks Stefan. Cheapest weld blkt I can find is $100 at Princess Auto. And I still have to get the hooks, etc.

Your link has it already-to-go. Nice.

Not sure where you live Len but Ontario Gas BBQ in Concord can get them from CB. I'm going to call to see when they will have one and drop in there to check them out.

An old blanket I use will suffice for the few (if ever) times I need one. At $110, it's too pricey IMO. Thanks for the idea though Gary.

I have the Guru jacket (blanket). It does have to be removed to tend the smoker but it's very easy to do. It's a loose fit and is weighted at the bottom with a heavy plastic (?) belt. It has a small vent hole in the top.

I've had it about a year and only used it two or three times. I've never really needed for cold weather (low 20s is coldest I smoked in so far) but have used it on windy occasions. It's made of heavy material and works great, but it is expensive.

Thanks Gary. I'm thinking about one only because I usually have something cookin every weekend. Now if the next winter is like last year it won't be necessary but I expect we will get some cold. In the great scheme of things my smoker and one of these blankets are a lot less than a BGE or a Primo.

Gary S,
That was exactly my thinking. At the time of my first smoker purchase a little over a year ago, I had narrowed it down to an 18 WSM or a large BGE. The high heat grilling capability of the BGE wasn't worth much to me because I had a Weber kettle. Insulation was the key advantage of the egg over the wsm but for $100 I could get all the insulation/wind protection I need. I also added a digiq dx and still have quite a bit less in my setup than a large bge would have cost.

Gary, I added a second dome vent to my 18 to get HH temps quicker and easier. Do you think I could modify one of those covers to accomodate the second vent?

Gary,
I'm not sure how easy it would be to modify or if you'd really need to. Obviously you could cut another hole in it but I think it would get a bit ragged after awhile. I'll try to get some pictures to post sometime tomorrow. I'm not sure if I can post the pics or not. Not too computer savvy.

Thanks Gary. I'm surprised there is only one grommet hole for the dome vent but for me that's no issue as I have a the tool for making the holes and attaching grommets. I would have thought a stitched cut out in the right spot would have been the way top go. Losing heat out top is no great deal but I can see where this will really hold in temps around the mid section and the dome given the way it's designed.

Thanks for taking the time to post the photos.

Gary,
No problem if you got the tool for making the grommet hole. I haven't had a problem with lack of ventilation but I don't put the blanket on until the smoke settles down and I put the meat on. It still has a very smokey flavor to it though.
