WSM 22 cover - heard from Weber

I just got an email from Weber regarding my comments about the water shedding ability of their WSM cover. They said they are forwarding my comments on to technical services.
They also said the covers are NOT water resistant, they are only dust covers and will keep the WSM from fading.

I bought a can of water proofer and sprayed it twice and it was fine in last nights rain, I did a 3rd coat today, (2 coats of the inside) so I got 5 coats of the entire cover, really soaked it.

I worry about standing water inside of the base causing rust and eventually rust through. Has anyone drilled a hole in the bottom to let water drain out?

Do what I do...go to Home Depot (or any hardware store) buy a case of 'contractor garbage bags'. Make sure they are minimum 3 mil thick. Slip it over the WSM and then put the dust cover over that. Eventually it will rip (took about a year on mine) and replace. For $23 I bought about 30 years of waterproof protection. Seriously even in severe thunderstorms and hundreds of inches of snow over the winter, the WSM stayed bone dry..not a single drop in the bottom.
Do NOT drill holes in the bottom.

edit...I just want to add that now that I have two WSM's, my waterproof protection is now only 15 years.....

did that and they didn't fit over the 22. They said contractor and had the flaps to tie, but maybe there are different sizes, these were huge.

But as I say the $4 for the spray seems to have worked

Jeff- with all do respect. It is a WATER smoker.................

OMG ROFL That is the funniest thing I have heard all day! Very true but I have had things rust out, probably being anal, but that is why I am still on my first set of gas tubes on my June 2000 Silver B, 13 years, and my Chevy Astro van went 330,000 miles with orig engine and tranny and 16 years old, it finally died in place.

I've had some moisture in mine from time to time and the ash usually soaks it up. I do not clean the bowl everytime. If you do drill a hole it has to be big enough that it won't plug up with ash and then you create another air source. Hopefully you won't abandon it that long that water would be a problem.

Dust cover??? It doesn't rain enough here in Souther California but I assumed they were water proof.

Never thought much about it since I keep them under a covered patio. Los Angeles has not seen enough rain to fill the bowl in many years. LOL

And if it does in San Fernando Valley heat it will dry in like 20 seconds.............=)

for the last week Massachusetts has been 96-100% humidity! at least it has only been in the 60's for temp. A dry day here is 45% humidity

We had almost 5 " last week when whatever the tropical storm was called came through here. I pulled the cover off my 18.5 today expecting to see a gray mud pit but Nada! I was surprised that no water had entered.
