Joe, on a kettle of that vintage, I suspect that you will find that there are no spaces in the leg sockets into which you can insert the tabs for the current ash-catcher assembly. If you are bound and determined to have an OTG ash-catcher, I think that you will have to resort to cutting into your antique with a Dremel tool.
As for shining up the lid (and even the bowl, for that matter), I have had great luck with Whink Glass/Ceramic Cooktop Cleaner.
Finally, that's a very nice specimen of a vintage cultural icon in an unusual (and hard to find) rich color. If it were me, I would be content with the saucer-style ashpan, rather than cutting into the thing.
