I need to burn a 5 gal bucket worth of paper and thought about doing it in my kettle. Will this ruin the kettle for BBQ? I figured I might have to burn a couple chimneys through afterward to clean it.

Too much paper for my little shredder to handle.

I don't see why it would ruin it. It's just paper. It will likely leave a ton of ashes, but you can clean that out fairly simple.

I had a bunch of cardboard floating around in the garage and decided to burn it in my WSM. I won't do that again. I didn't take the door off and it melted a fist sized hole right straight thru it. I have since ordered a replacement door from the folks at CB.

Out of curiosity, why not simply recycle the bucket of paper?

Or is this your version of secure document disposal?

I used to clean the cooking grate on my 18-1/2 inch kettle by filling the inside full of balled up newspaper as possible, and lighting it. This burned off all the accumulated crud on the rack, and didn't seem to hurt the kettle any - I'm still cooking on it, and it's well over 30 years old.
