Whiskey Barrels

Has anyone gotten a hold of some fresh whiskey barrels and cut up to use the oak. Sitting here with my Maker's on the rock got me thinking.....

Do you find a big difference in flavour? I've been thinking of trying some but the stuff at the bbq store is pretty expensive.

Jeff excellent choice on the Makers. Have you ever seen the Hairy Biker episode when they visit the distillery?

I use wine barrels all the time & they are great. I get them for around $50 a barrel & chop them up with my chop saw.

Yea i have used a few different barrels (whiskey/wine) To be honest its like using pure oak,Never really had the aged content shine thru.

I've used the Jack Daniels oak barrel chips before for steaks and quick cooks on the kettle. I'm not sure the whiskey flavor gets in but it sure does smell good while it's burning.

If you can get them from a distillery or winery or someone that deals them direct than that's cool.
You have to watch out for the ones that are split in half for planters available at garden centers and such. Some treat them with insecticides and wood preservatives.

I'm sure you have all heard the phrase, "A day late and a dollar short"?

A number of years ago, I had access to all of the whiskey barrels I wanted just for breaking them up and hauling them away (Seagrams Distillery in Southern Indiana). I, with the help of my two sons, broke up truck loads of the barrels and sawed them up for firewood for the fireplace. Man, was that good wood (solid oak, of course).

Now, that I am grilling and smoking, there is none left! Such is life...
