I am getting ready to make my big purchase, Smoker, accessories and all.

My question is how does the Redi-check from Maverick work out for a beginner before I decide to make any mods?

Are the cables long enough to reach the sending unit somewhere off of the WSM when run through the top vent? Is there a better configuration?

Thanks for the help.

The great thing about the WSM is it works fine without any mods. Cables for remote thermometers can be passed under the lid using reasonable care with neither damage nor deliterious effect on the cooking process. Running probe cables thru the vent is fine-- until you need to remove the lid. I find my Weber chimney handle a great mount for the magnetic holder on the back of my Taylor probe thermometer, but anything will do-- a chair, a table.

Scott, I run my probe cables under the lid, not through the top vent. It won't hurt the probe cable if you gently replace the lid. Then I set the transmitter on a table next to the WSM. Works great. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I've been running mine through the top corner of the access door. It doesn't cause any air leaks and the wires don't get pinched like they do from the lid.

Scott, while the the ET-73 is not required, for the beginner, like me, monitoring both the cooker and meat temp can be very instructive. Recording the temps for a butt cook every 30 minutes has helped me learn about the cooking process.

Required no, helpfull yes.

So far the ET-73 is the best accessory I've purchased for use with my WSM. Of course, I haven't bought the BBQ Guru yet, so I reserve the right to change my mind later.

I, too, run the cables under the lid. No problems so far.

Hope this helps!

I have been running mine under the lid, but I like Scott H's idea above about running thru the access door. Has anyone else used this method? Russ, I assume it didn't cause any problem with door alignment or air leaking?

I use to run mine though the lid and switched to the access door. I don't notice any difference (air leaks, etc), but find that you don't have the probe wires all over the place when they're throught the access door (i.e. the wires are easier to manage). I generally run my smoker probe on the bottom rack and then can check meat temp either on the top or bottom.

Hey guys,
Shotgun Fred at the BBQ Guru introduced some eyelets that take the place of ?? bolts that hold the grate supporting brackets in place. They're hollow thus allowing passage of thermocouples or thermometer probes into the WSM. Here are a few threads on the subject:
http://tvwbb.101inc.com/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=000161 , http://tvwbb.101inc.com/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=000168 , http://tvwbb.101inc.com/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=000182 .
A few of us still haven?t received their eyelets and since the 1st batch totaled around 20 orders, maybe he?ll run another batch if there?s enough interest. I suggest posting your interest here as well as emailing www.thebbqguru.com if you?re interested. I understand Shotgun Fred will be out of town through this weekend but I will send him an email Sunday afternoon and will include any additional interest. Tell your WSM friends!

It's not a perfectly tight seal to begin with and the two wires really don't make any difference at all.

D M Sattelberg, welcome. Everybody was new at some time,I'm still pretty wet behind the ears, but this ia a great place to learn. Yes, the ET-73 has two probes. John W's link will take you right to it and they probably have the best price.
