Where is a good source for wood chunks?


 
I've gotten mine at lowes or home depot before. Usually the weber brand but as of late I just take a branch off my pecan tree or orange tree.

I get 2 types of oak and pecan from my property.
Ask friends and relatives for limbs that have fallen on their property especially after a storm.
Ask professional tree trimmers and individuals. Give them a flyer with the types of wood. Include your name and telephone number.
Local individuals who sell firewood.
Look in the free classified newspapers found at convenience stores.

Trees grown in different parts of the country will vary in aroma and taste.

Most of the wood found at the big box stores have been dried so they don't mold while in the bag, and dried wood doesn't produce as good a quality of smoke as wood with the natureal moisture still in it.

I get the double filet cut 2/3 & 1 cubic foot boxes, Cherry, Maple, Hickory, Red Oak & Alder. Yes it does cost more, but I use much less than the bagged stuff, because it does have the right moisture content.
Its cut from the heartwood, no bark or Knots or gnarly looking pcs, so less waste and shipping is included in the price.

You can get the Weber wood chunks through Amazon and its Prime too. Bass Pros Shops has a bunch of chunks and chips also.
 
If you get to know the people at a nearby orchard, and buy their fruit they might give you
fruit wood from pruning or trees that did not survive. If you offer to trade them some BBQ
for the wood, you just might become lifelong friends.
 
All my local hardware stores carry them, most of the local supermarkets have them, and there are some BBQ & grill stores that carry them.
 
I know it doesn't work for everybody, but sometimes if a coworker or family member knows about your hobby, it can get you free wood. My friend at work had a huge pecan branch that was the size of a small tree. He sawed most of it up and brought it to me, it worked out to about a year's supply, and that's with steady smoking! Also, my Mom had a down cherry tree on the back of her property, I got me some chunks from that, and some pear from her orchard.
