Where do you prefer to buy ribs and what to look for?

Just got my new 18" WSM last week and plan to smoke ribs soon, although I've only used it once due to weather. :(

Just wondered where some people prefer to buys ribs from and what to look for? Wondering If I should renew my membership at BJ's, consider Sams, or just go with a supermarket. No Costco near me. Got meats from a butcher last week, but also trying to save money over the long haul.

Baby back ribs seem to be the tastiest for me. Only cooked them a few times prior to smoker. Open to any suggestions!

Don't know about the Midwest, but down here in Central Texas you can get very nice natural pork and beef that hasn't been frozen or enhanced. H.E.B. markets are a good source. Last week, St. Louis trimmed spares were $2.79. I try to stay away from the national brands, since they are almost always frozen and enhanced.

It's impossible to get unenhanced ribs at supermarkets here. Sam's is usually pretty good but you have to buy 3 packs. I'm pretty sure they are unenhanced.

We typically get ours from the local Meijer. They come from the supplier vacuum packed, and have always been good.

I don't like the pre-rubbed or marinated ribs, I think the meat gets over-tenderized.

Dustin,
We usually shop at the H.E.B. in Dripping Springs and they have a pork brand ("Natural ..something") that includes ribs and butts that are nicely selected and trimmed, at a good price. They also have a good selection of USDA Prime packer briskets on any given day. Bonus is that they have an exclusive on Franklin Barbecue sauces. Just tried the Espresso the other day. Very nice with beef.

Prairie Fresh - especially the "Natural" brand. No preservatives - all natural, have always had good success with the pork butts, boneless loins, spare ribs and the back ribs.
